463696 2006-06-17 19:38:00 yes I've come across that voltage problem too on a pc .....forgotten what brand it was now but anyway what you need to do is to look on the side of the powersupply unit......now...hopefully i'tll have a 'key' to what colour wires have what voltages......then compare that to whatever psu you are thinking of buying.....jsut to be sure that your plugs will carry the same voltages......ah......now as I say cant remember the brand but in the case i dealt with the 'standard' psu had a #6, (or was it #7) plug and the voltages from it were 5v if I recall.......the existing psu had 3.3V from that same plug.....that plug went onto the mobo and powered the ram slots I seem to remember.......now I coulda cut and rejoined some wires to feed the correct voltages thru that plug from the new psu if I wanted to.......so it wasn't impossible to use .......you may find that an psu that is the *correct* type for you may cost you an arm and a leg or two.......for example last time I priced a psu for a specific compaq machine, (and this was a couple of years ago) compaq quoted me $198+gst.........THEIVES......anyway all I did in that instance was a little hacksaw surgury on the case and fitted a 'standard' psu for about $60....... drcspy (146)

463698 2006-06-18 04:18:00 BUT what I am saying is that no matter the PSU the voltages are ALWAYS the same

T_E_O_R, not to worry, I very much appreciate your response to my post. I have learned from you and from everyone who has responded. If no one responded, I'd be at a loss. Now I have some options to make some changes.

Each and every answer gives me additional information and I'm grateful for them all.

Thanks to alll. I appreciate your help (and to you T_E_O_R for googling and finding the Bestec OEM replacement.....that's great information).

Keep up the outstanding support. Some of us (me) are just novice techno geeks (said as a compliment)....I hope to become one as well....and hopeful will with a "little help from my forum friends".

I hope to be talking to you guys on my next question.

463699 2006-06-18 04:25:00 anyway all I did in that instance was a little hacksaw surgury on the case and fitted a 'standard' psu for about $60.......

I have actually thought (and may still do it) about doing some "hacksaw surgery" myself.....nothing wrong with that. I'm not concerned about how my computer looks....if looks counted.....I would be in trouble because my "puter" room is always a total mess......but it's mine!

Thanks for the input.

463700 2006-06-18 04:40:00 I have seen 200/250W psu run a 9600.... Prescott (11)
463701 2006-06-18 05:38:00 For a start, people over estimate how much wattage is needed for PC's.

Many HP Pavilion may not take a new standard clone PSU as many cases have proprietary PSU's of different sizes.

I would say it will probably be fine as the 9550 power draw probably is not a lot greater than the on board chipset anyway, chuck it in and forget.

Many "300 watt" clone PSU's are closer to 200watt as dodgy manufactures mislabel for sales, I am amazed the commerce commission hasn't investigated this. At least it is probably a real 200watt.
