463736 2006-06-16 22:41:00 Hi,
I have recently installed and very happily will continue with xtra "Go" plan" with up to 50X faster download speed as compared to dial up,and in that time I have not had the serious drop in speed that so many F1 's complain about, as relating to Telecom products etc.,especially speed.
In that time I enquired of F1,as to the need to switch off my modem to stop any interference, with IP ,etc,
With that query various answers came forward - to about 50-50 either way.
Yesterday another xtra client asked what was my speed as his had dropped to 150 odd kb/s- in his words not much faster really than dial up.
We both apparently share the same telecom exchange - and though I am nearer than he, to that, his wiring/copper lines etc are 30 years younger than mine, so resistance, should cancell each other out.---and when I told him that my speed was as above, he rang xtra?Telecom and asked why and how etc.
He was told his modem should be switched off, then back on--he did this and immediately got back to 250 odd kB/s
This suggests that to switch off at least once a day, if not at night, is a good thing.
I know he is delighted

463737 2006-06-16 23:08:00 His modem should be switched off?! How - is it external? Or did they mean the PC. Theres no reason to turn anything off (apart from power consumption). I'd recommend this guy do a malware scan and see whats using his connection. pctek (84)
463738 2006-06-16 23:51:00 Hi pctek,
My modem--router is external as is my mate's,and I can quite easily switch it off with an off/on switch at the rear of it, and have done, frequently, to be able to work on the 'pooter, offline ( I have only 1 gb to play with in a month and am getting very near the limit with 10 days to go,) which is a pity, but finances preclude paying more to get the 2 g b offered in a different mode/contract.
He has just replied to my e mail showing that he once again gained all his promised speed, by switching off,(he had had a big day yesterday online, and had not switched off for two days)--- and would have to look at a newer router, when he can afford one, but meanwhile he can cope with the switch off ( once a day)
I am not clever enough to state why this improvement happens, that would be up to you I T.
Whether this has affected my speed I do not know, as I often switch off at night anyway, though not always.
At this moment I am on about more than 1/2 the speed I have enjoyed all week ( possibly because it is so damned cold and miserable, every man and his dog is online, instead)-- but it is still about 200kB/s as against 257kB/s before

463739 2006-06-17 04:23:00 I never switch off my router. If the PC is off, then nothings happening anyway.
When its on, the 3rd party firewall stops any programs from helping themselves to the net and blocks anything coming in.
So there should be no additional usage other than what you yourself have used.

As for speed, as I said in my previous post........

463740 2006-06-17 06:48:00 My external router runs 24/7 here. Even when the PC's are off the router isn't.

Speed never varies from 3300 ~ 3400 kbps download and 130 - 135 kbps upload, at any time I test it. This is about right for my 3.5 Mb/128 kb plan. (I never get anywhere near my 5 GB cap)

I would blame his router as being a problem requiring some "magic cure" of power cycling.

463741 2006-06-17 08:46:00 Hi Godfather,
as you say, another, less steam driven, more scientific modem appears to be the answer :D
I will pass these answers to my mate- thank you all
It is apparent that his modem is not stopping him after all, yet today he is a lot happier than before - so co-incidence or not the hard word will be upon him- look out the purse string holder
