463448 2006-06-15 23:13:00 Hi pf1'ers,
I can't seem to get my head around this small problem. From the Tools>Options in IE I can not change my Home Page. Entering a new URL and clicking Apply then OK doesn't do a thing. I have then tried to change the setting by going into the registry "HKEY-Current-user > Software > Microsoft > Internet Explorer > Main" and then trying to Edit the Start Page data to a new URL. This just results in the message "Cannot Edit Start Page: Error writing the value's new contents"
So I then boot into Safe Mode and in that mode I am able to edit the start page data OK. On reboot Zone Alarm says that a program is wanting to set a new Home Page, I click Allow and all is fine, new URL is set, however I am still not able to make another change without going through the Safe Mode procedure again. Can anyone enlighten me on how to fix this problem? I suspect ZA but don't know why.
Incidentally this problem does not appear in Firefox.
Thanks.

try doing spyware scans, virus scan etc like using microsoft windows defender beta 2 from microsoft (downloads free) and use it. i found it has a pretty good interface and so it might help if you do fing spyware or adware on your pc.
cheers

463450 2006-06-16 01:19:00 Hi Silver_Blade

I have run full system scans with Defender, Ad-aware, Avast A/virus and all definitions are right up to date.

Nothing found.

463451 2006-06-16 01:23:00 What happens if you choose a page and open it,then select current page? Cicero (40)
463452 2006-06-16 01:27:00 Do you have Spybot and/or SpywareBlaster on your computer? If so, they have an option to lock your homepage as a defence against homepage hijackers and you will need to disable it to make a change.

Not sure about Defender but that may also have similar protection.

463453 2006-06-16 03:19:00 Hi

Use current page does not work.

Don't have Spybot S&D on this machine.
JonB (1885)
463454 2006-06-16 04:42:00 If it's this "CyberDefender" then it's a piece of malicious crap .

There's something not right with IE (surprise surprise), give Spybot a whirl in Advanced mode and with the definitions all up to date (same applies to Adaware re definitions if you already ahven't done so) .

Otherwise download and run Hijackthis and post the log back here for analysis .

463455 2006-06-16 05:35:00 Spywareblaster also has the ability to disable the IE home page setting as said above, so do you have that on your computer? zqwerty (97)
463456 2006-06-16 06:44:00 Have installed and run Spybot with latest update to no avail. The following is my hijackthis log. I am aware of the winMX hosts entries, they have been on the machine for many months without trouble.

463457 2006-06-18 12:44:00 BTW, what is the page that is butting in on your homepage, that'd be a pretty good pointer as to what is causing the problem, would it not.

There are better people than me to look at this, so BUMP.

But, I reckon the following are suss:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SMSERIAL] sm56hlpr.exe

what's the story with winmx, it's a file sharing client, right? it looks a bit invasive.

O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe (I'd tend to knock this one on the head regardless. Turn it off in Services)

I see good old Macrovision have their fingers in your PC.

Why the Symantic entries, did you used to run Nortons? You might want to try the Sysmantic removal tool to get rid of it completely.
