464108 2006-06-18 07:18:00 I'm looking for a really simple photo viewer to put on my parents' computer for them. It's a pretty old system, running win98 on a celeron 500mhz (I think) so I want something really light and easy to use. It only has to do basic functions, basically something like the photo viewer that comes default with XP, with automatic resizing to screen and thumbnail viewing etc.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

464110 2006-06-18 09:11:00 I have used Irfanview for a number of years and its a fine program, but this year swapped to Picasa by Google, which I much prefer as it is more intuitive and the interfaces much cleaner to use. I have used it on my wife's 330 Celeron and it runs fine. tutaenui (1724)
464111 2006-06-18 10:49:00 I use Faststone Image viewer on Win 98 se. Prefer it to Picassa or Irfanview . Very versatile indeed and will do all you want (and plenty more) in a small download.http://www.faststone.org/ golfer (6609)

FastStone is my favourite image viewer as well. It's brilliant and will work well on that machine.

It's a bit similar to Picassa in some respects in as much as you can see previews of your pics by clicking on a folder. But it doesn't go hunting thru your hard drive collecting all your pics like Picassa does and which I don't like.

One of the really cool features is that it can display up to four images at once so you can compare them. That's really handy when you have taken several pics of the same scene and want to weed out the best one.

Irfanview is great and I still use that a lot but I just prefer FastStone better for browsing folders. :)

464116 2006-06-19 03:26:00 I have used the Faststone viewer since FoxyMX recommended it some time ago.

I was previously using Irfan, ACDsee, & others, but Faststone is now my preferred viewer. I'd agree with Foxy's comments here, and the suggestion to try it & see.

One of the useful options is: With an image viewed in full screen, placing the cursor at the top, bottom, left, or right of the screen reveals many options for resizing/editing/emailing etc, & viewing exif image data.

There is much more. Try it and see.

Gotta love that feature.

Another feature I use a lot is being able to losslessly rotate pics that have been taken in portrait mode with Shift+Ctrl+L/R keyboard shortcuts. It's a bit quicker than Irfanview's method which has a couple of steps to do the same thing and therefore takes a bit longer when you have many to do. It can also be done in preview or fullscreen mode, which is very handy.
