463934 2006-06-17 23:34:00 Two weeks ago I finally got around to putting SP2 on my computer. :D Since then I have noted a slowdown in operation.
I have plenty of power, 2G of RAM, 64 bit processor etc.
Most bizarre and annoying, my external Dynalink modem rejects its own driver that had been running sweetly for months, accepts a completely different one [conexant analog] and drops it each time I shut down so that I have to reinstall it each time I boot up.
I am looking at uninstalling SP2 which is not what I want to do as some apps now only run with it installed.
Are there any issues surrounding SP2 that I havn't picked up and can anybody suggest a solution?
thanks in advance. :)

463935 2006-06-17 23:50:00 Check if there is a new driver available for your modem, heaps of drivers were released after SP2 to allow for SP2. snoopy (74)
463936 2006-06-18 00:30:00 yep, done that as soon as it first happened after installing SP2. KMoA (2743)
463937 2006-06-18 00:40:00 Have you run an anti-malware test first before installing SP2? If you are still stuck with a slow PC after running the test, try reinstalling SP2 and see if the overall speed improves.

Cheers :)

463939 2006-06-18 04:50:00 <snicker>Have you done one since installing it . . . . . see above post about MS snoop stuff . . . . . . . . actually yes there are issues with SP2 . . . . . . . . . . do what Jameskan has said . . . . . .

Rather than downloading the SP2 update on top of a screwed-up system, use this opportunity to return to a cleaner . . . . . leaner system similar to what you had when XP was first released . How is that accomplished? Take a deep breath, grab your ankles and do a complete reinstall of the operating system and get rid of all the junk that has accumulated to slow down system performance .

You'll be amazed at how quick and responsive the machine is after it's f-disk'd and reinstalled . Hell . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I'd be happy if just a tiny percentage followed this advice, but I know it won't happen . However . . . . . if you do . . . . . . you'll regain an appreciation for how enjoyable a clean installation can be to use and maybe . . . . . . just maybe . . . . . . . you'll take a few extra steps in the future to keep the system well maintained, updated, and secure or you'll be right back here again burning it all down . . . all over!

There will be problems with SP-2 if you wait too long after a fresh install of your opsys to add it . Since SP-2 is almost a total re-write of XP, it needs to get a firm foot into the system before you get all knotted up with spyware and viruses . After you get malware on your system, SP-2 will raise hell .

If you want to really REALLY get rid of any problems, you'll have to burn the whole thing down . . . but first!!!!!!!!! .

Get Belarc Adviser ( . belarc . com/free_download . html" target="_blank">www . belarc . com) to get copies of all your keys and licenses BEFORE you commit suicide by formatting the hdd and then find you ain't got the keys!

Then . . . this is very important!!!!! PRINT OUT THE RESULTS!!!!

You should have about 3 to 7 pages of info that you must put into a safe place for reference .

Make sure you've got a full-install XP disc and then follow these instructions:

NOTE below!

After you have activated your XP software for the first time, you never need to do so again . Each time you reinstall XP and before the burn-down, keep a copy of your wpa . dbl file from your old install . This file can be found in your \windows\system32 folder .

After reinstallation replace the wpa . dbl back into the windows\system32 directory and forget about reactivation .

There are steps you have to take, both before and after the reinstall, and each one is time consuming:

Not finding a buddy with SP-2 on a cd, then get an order to M$ for your FREE copy!!!!

After it arrives via buddy or snailmail, then get the install going .

Once that is done it's simply a matter of reinstalling all the applications and restoring the various data backups that were done previously .

Something you have to consider:

If you are using a pre-installed recovery partition from your OEM and you have been infected with a virus or spyware and you use the recovery partition or even use "System Restore", you run the risk of migrating the virus right back in to your installation .

Viruses can infect the System Volume Information and the Recycler folder as well as the partition from the OEM .

Many people who have used the recovery partition on their hard drive, had things work fine for a couple of days, and then SNAFU!!! Same garbage all over again .

So, if you have been infected, best thing to do is write zeros to the drive and start over . . . after backing up all your important data, of course!!!

463940 2006-06-18 06:12:00 cheers for the responses.
I had a clean install just prior to installing SP2, lightning fried the 'puter so got a new ...everything.
I have 3 anti-malwares apps installed and I run them regularly plus Norton sweeps once a week.
The slow down is notable but not a lot, compared to some 'puters I have had, its running at lightspeed.
re: the modem prob. I have just installed a different driver which worked [obviously ] and am about to reboot to see if it stays with me.
cheers.
