463874 2006-06-17 11:03:00 Hi Everyone

My first time back in goodness knows how long. I guess Mike will know me, but most of the rest of you won't remember me.

I am moving into a new place soon with two others. I have two computers and each of the others have one. I decided it would be cool to try to create a network environment.

I wanted to turn one of my computers into a File and Print Server. I also wanted to set up the server to run as a DNS.

At the moment all of the computers (except the one I intend to setup as a server) are running Windows XP Home or Professional. The one I plan to setup as the server is running Linux Ubuntu.

Can anyone tell me if XP Professional can run as a File/Print Server on a network? If it can....can you give me step by step instructions of how to do this or point me to a website that gives those instructions?

In the alternative (and just because it'd be fun to try), how about setting up Linux to run as the File/Print/DNS Server. Now that's a tall ask, but if you can help step by step with that too, I'd REALLY appreciate it :)

Thanks

463875 2006-06-17 14:02:00 a LAN DC++ hub would be quite a good idea in a flat situation, are you interested in this? It is very easy to set up. Prescott (11)
463876 2006-06-17 22:42:00 Ooh Ooh now tell me what a LAN DC++ is :D

I haven't heard of that (probably heard of what it is but don't know the abbreviation).

Thing is, I really want it to run as a DNS/File server and print server. So...if the LAN DC++ does something similar to that, then let me know.

I already have a peer-to-peer network with my two computers and one of the laptops (the second person is moving to Wellington soon so I am trying to set it all up as a network now so then I only have to arrange to plug him in and tweak his settings when he arrives).

Falkos how tos are normally fairly good

the one thing with a print server though is to make sure your printer is supported, before starting

463878 2006-06-18 03:07:00 Linux distributions all come with all the software you need to do this. Enable the Samba server, and that will do files and printer. A full DNS server is a bit more of a project, but a simple caching DNS server is fairly easy. Graham L (2)
463879 2006-06-18 06:11:00 Cool thanks....now therein lies the problem (and my question) can you tell me HOW to enable to Samba server and the project of the DNS Server (even the caching DNS server) :)

Thanks

463880 2006-06-26 08:14:00 **Bump**

Still going through the setup and getting different answers from what the web says I should be getting - I think I know someone who might be able to come and help me out, but until they get back from overseas I'll keep trying the help I get here :)

Thanks

463882 2006-07-19 13:27:00 In terms of a home file server that you just want to simply share all files without worrying much about permissions, Samba IS a great solution! Its fast, easy.. yadda yadda, and here's a small how-to:

nzlinuxfaq.orcon.net.nz

Cant say Ive setup bind before though sorry

463883 2006-07-20 03:25:00 Give "caching dns server linux" to Google, and take your pick of the howtos. ;) Graham L (2)
