464039 2006-06-18 10:03:00 I thought so as well. At least for the last year I hadn't patched or updated XP and no problems.

SP2 was only a moment of weakness because I had it on disc... I shall berate myself for some time to come for installing it

It did get me to wondering what MS will be offering in 10 years time, presumably they will want to own your cochones or get you to sign over your first-born (which I admit may not be a problem for some folks!)

To give some balance, or maybe make the differences glaringly obvious, when I re-installed XP I also installed a number of open source programs... none wanted to call home, demand your e-mail address, require you to opt-out of their mailing lists or answer stupid surveys and it was a relief to read an EULA that said simply "This software is open source, enjoy"

I also came up against a (paid for) program that had an installer/update checker that could not be switched off when it wanted to phone home, the only way to stop it was download another program to uninstall the updater.

I'm sure there's a story somewhere about a man who killed the goose that laid the golden egg... hmmm and I thought it was a work of fiction
