464158 2006-06-18 10:48:00 Hey people What do you think about this PC off trademe:
www.trademe.co.nz

Anyone had any experiences with these?
Any problems with Linux/stability/etc?

Cheers

464159 2006-06-18 10:53:00 It doesn't say what the CPU is.

No problems with Linux stability - it's not perfect but is a lot more stable than MS WIndows!

464160 2006-06-18 11:05:00 I meant hardware stability, like no glitches that are going to make it shut down unexpectedly.

Just trying to make sure there are no well-known problems with this sort of PC b4 I buy.. :)

Clearly states it is a 1.6 Ghz Pentuim 4.

(and XP is rock solid :angry  )

So it does - plenty of grunt for a modern Linux PC. If there is a problem with Linux, most likely area is the video card.

464163 2006-06-18 11:49:00 Most Compaq D510's came with onboard video, but there were some models that came out with a slimline 16 or 64Mb video card (can't remember which). I wouldn't expect there to be any issues if it was an onboard video model. That said we have seen quite a few of the original 40Gb hard drives starting to fail - possibly due to excessive disk wipes but a number of these exact models (Compaq D510, 1.6GHz) have failed hard drives at one of my clients. From memory this model is at least 4+ years old now...?

464164 2006-06-18 12:20:00 But "Linux Obutan" ... ?

Wonder if the seller actually means Ubuntu.

Obutan sounds a bit Simian to me.
They may be trying to make a monkey out of it?
