464947 2006-06-23 04:37:00 HI, thanks all who replied.
I've had a pretty good run with other Asus products so will probably go with the Asus 1608P.
However there seems to be 3 versions of this device, the :-
1608P : 1608p2 : 1608p3.
Any one know the difference between these units ?
the vendors don't seem to be much help with this.

TIA
Phil.

464948 2006-06-25 20:26:00 As far as I know the model "3" is the latest - 1608P is the oldest etc etc.

But I am just guessing as they have come out in sequence.

464949 2006-06-26 01:22:00 i agree with Tukapa, i also have an asus 1608p (a year old) flashed with pioneer firmware and ive burnt literally hundreds of dvds both +r/-r . The only time ive ever had a dud was because it was my fault, eg trying to encode an avi to mpeg and burning a dvd at the same time) dual layer media is still kinda expensive , close to the $10 mark for a single blank (from warehouse stationery) .

and as always, make sure youve got the reliable media to go along with it .

as for brands, dont think youll go wrong with NEC, Pioneer, Asus (only ever had Asus cd/dvd drives/ writers), LG and LiteOn .

Theres plenty of decent feedback on this topic, you shouldnt have a problem choosing :-)

as for the 1608P . 3 thing, as with Tukapa, probably the 3 variation is just the latest or most recent update in the model lineup .

464950 2006-06-26 06:39:00 Just different burn speeds .

One diff between the 1608P / P3, is the PS3 burns to DVD-RAM .

The 1608P doesnt support burning to DVD-RAM

464952 2006-06-26 08:41:00 I agree with Tukapa, the Asus - 1608P is a good burner. My friend owns one and has had no problems with it.

In a real world scenario of past experience do not go for the cheap Samsung brands as they always have issues. I have had a Pioneer 110 (not the D version) for over 6 months and have had no problems at all. Also spend that extra little bit of money to get a good model, beacuse as with anything hardware related it will be worth it in the end

Some good brands in my opinion are:

Asus
NEC
Pioneer
LiteOn

464953 2006-06-26 09:38:00 Thanks to you all.
On the advice received (and my past experience with Asus products)
I've ordered the Asus 1608p3s
Hopefully a bit of future proofing
many thanks to you all.

One thing to check is the warranty. Most are 12 months. Samsung gives 24 months, or at least it did when I bought mine last year - after my LiteOn died at 14 months, just after the warranty expired.

Have not had any "issues" with the Samsung. I read various reviews about Samsungs (simple to Google anything and get 'user comments'), and while they were not tops they were good enough especially with the 2 year warranty.

464955 2006-06-26 21:59:00 The LG GSA-4166B would be my choice . . . can be had from upwards of $100;

16x support for both DVD-R and DVD+R (that's six minutes for a full DVD), 8x DVD+RW (14 minutes for a DVD), 6x DVD-RW, 4x DVD-R Dual Layer, 8x DVD+R Dual Layer and 5x DVD-RAM, as well as 16x DVD-ROM and 48x/32x/48x on the CD side of things . Lightscribe and 24 month warranty on it as standard .

Cheers
