464706 2006-06-24 03:46:00 I am still very skeptical about these tests for faster connections.

Right now its shows my average download speeds on my 10Mb Telstra connection of around 4MB

Where flicking to the below test shows 6Mb "averages"
www.nzdsl.co.nz

If I flick to below I more likely average 7Mb
www.nzdsl.co.nz

If I download manually from FTP using multiple sources or fast torrents can I get speeds of over around 1.05MB (around 9MB), I can do this nearly any time of the day by the way.

So to recap the speed test in this thread shows my speed at only 4MB but in real life I get 9MB, not really very useful, and very misleading for the unwary.

This test is designed for people on residential connections with speeds of up to 4mbps. If you are on a faster connection then the results may be less accurate and not reflect your true maximum speed.

Just out of curiosity, does it measure your upstream speed accurately?

Up speeds seem more accurate yes.

Actually I should of also said, I work for a company in CHCH that has a 100MB dedicated Telstra connection. I often (usually) see real speeds 5000+ KB/s, that kilobytes not bits, and this speed test shows about 5Mb which I know is just way off.

It seems like a lot of these tests can't deal with testing much over 5MB.

464709 2006-06-26 09:37:00 Ive found the best speed test is downloading GAIM from the sourceforge (OptusNet Australian mirror) Chilling_Silence (9)

Does make you wonder why the guy from PCworld was testing his 20Mb connection and posting the results, clearly he missed it too .

464714 2006-06-26 23:39:00 can the jetstreamgames speed test handle fast connections? Greven (91)

Yes jetstreamgames speed test seems to have a lot more bandwidth to test faster connections (probably more reliable all around). As you can see in the second link down it measures 64MB and did it consistently up to about 75MB on a 100Mb Telstra connection.

You have to remember to CTRL+F5 it otherwise it gives stupid cached results.
