465403 2006-06-23 04:51:00 I use my own laptop (running XP Pro, SP2) for business - during the day it is connected to the LAN at work, not as an explicit domain connection (I am logged in as "me" not as "BUSINESSNAME\user"), but I am able to 'see' and use the shared directories on the network.

At the end of the day, I either unplug the network cable and put the machine into Hibernation, or just put it into Hibernation and then unplug. When I get home I fire it up again (unconnected to any network, other than my ISP - Woosh) and happily use the machine in this state.

However, after a certain amount of time (undetermined - not consistent), the laptop just freezes - nothing to do other than hit the off button and restart it. Once this is done, I have no further problems until I reconnect and disconnect the following day.

The Event Viewer displays an error relating to the SNMP service:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: SNMP
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1101
Date: 22/06/2006
Time: 7:01:07 p.m.
User: N/A
Computer: JOHN-TOSH
Description:
The SNMP Service is ignoring extension agent key SOFTWARE\Microsoft\IPXMibAgent\CurrentVersion because it is missing or misconfigured.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at go.microsoft.com
Data:
0000: 02 00 00 00 ....

This entry in the event log appears to be consistently the last one prior to my switching off the laptop, so I am assuming there is an issue somewhere here.

Can anyone tell me what is misconfigured?

Registry values for the relevant path are:

(Default) - REG_SZ - (value not set)
0 - REG_SZ - Software\Microsoft\W3SVC\CurrentVersion
1 - REG_SZ - SOFTWARE\Microsoft\LANManagerMIB2Agent\CurrentVers ion
2 - REG_SZ - SOFTWARE\Microsoft\RFC1156Agent\CurrentVersion
3 - REG_SZ - SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HostMIB\CurrentVersion
4 - REG_SZ - SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SNMPMIB\CurrentVersion
5 - REG_SZ - SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SNMP_EVENTS\CurrentVersion
6 - REG_SZ - SOFTWARE\Microsoft\IGMPMibAgent\CurrentVersion
7 - REG_SZ - SOFTWARE\Microsoft\IPMulticastMibAgent\CurrentVers ion
8 - REG_SZ - SOFTWARE\Microsoft\IPXMibAgent\CurrentVersion

Thanks.

465404 2006-06-23 04:57:00 first thing is putting into Hibernation and changing the connections etc is just asking for problems.

dos it do it if you shut the pc down then take it home ?

465405 2006-06-23 04:59:00 SNMP is ignoring the key value, and it's only a warning. So I doubt if it's the problem.

Why are you running SNMP? I'd turn it off. It's not needed to run anything that I know of. It's intended as a management information tool in large systems.

It's probably the last item in the event log because SNMP will be doing a scan at shutdown so it's got uptodate information.

I think your problem will be elsewhere. (Of course, you will disable SNMP and the problem will go away. I don't care. )

p.s. Especially if you follow tweak's advice. :D

Wow - that was a quick response - thanks!!

No, a normal shutdown and restart does not cause this issue (but I'm lazy, and don't like waiting for the laptop to start up again from scratch!! ;) )

Thanks - I don't know why I am running SNMP - isn't it a network service that is required when connected to a LAN? I'm not a 'networky' person so I am not trying to be deliberately thick...

[EDIT] Oops! Forgot to mention here that I use SQL Server 2005 - is SNMP needed for this?

465408 2006-06-23 05:15:00 SNMP is only required if a system administrator wants it. I doubt if it's widely used, except by automated logging systems. It's diabolically horrible to use manually.

I think I'd go with tweak'e. SNMP won't do any harm, except by confusing you with warning messages. ;)

Thanks guys - I have switched off the service and changed it to Manual start. Now I'll see whether this isolates this problem a little more... Cheers - try to have a warm weekend!

465410 2006-06-23 09:22:00 Just in case anyone is still looking at this one - laptop lockup happened again tonight.Event Viewer indicated a DCOM problem - further investigation indicated a problem with the permissions for the launch and activation permissions of Machine Debugger Manager (which appears to have something to do with IIS). Added the appropriate user and amended permissions - now I'll cross my fingers and see if the problem still happens.... johcar (6283)
465411 2006-06-24 04:23:00 Same approach: Are you using IIS? A quick look with "iis sql server" to Google gave some links suggesting problems using IIS and SQL server together. ;)

Instead of fixing problems with all the "services", you might gain more use of the computer you have paid for by stopping some of them. :D

465412 2006-06-24 06:48:00 Same approach: Are you using IIS? A quick look with "iis sql server" to Google gave some links suggesting problems using IIS and SQL server together. ;) Unfortunately, I am using IIS, and also SQL Server - I am testing various applications that need either one or the other (sometimes both). I guess I'll have to suck it and see.... Thanks for your help.
