2006-06-23 00:26:00 | Is there any way that i can "max out" my 56k modem? Im sick of it being slow. The other day i was downloading something, and it strangely went at about 260kb a second. Normally it is about 5kb a second.. | Wardog (6821) | |
2006-06-23 00:34:00 | The max you will ever get is ~6KBps. If you think you got 260kb, something was wrong. If you want fast, get broadband.

2006-06-23 00:36:00 | Get used to it, 5kB isn't bad for a modem. Sometimes the data can be compressed by the modem at the other end before transmission, when your modem decompresses the file it appears as if the rate was higher. | PaulD (232) | |
2006-06-23 00:37:00 | you can only download as fast as they can upload. even broadband won't help if they only upload it as 260kb. | tweak'e (69) | |
2006-06-23 00:45:00 | No, the download went at 260kb a second. It finished like 1mb of the download in like 4 seconds. Then it went to 220kb, 190kb, 120kb, 93kb, 60kb, 40kb, then stayed at 19kb for the rest of the download. | Wardog (6821) | |

It was probably a compressed picture or your file did not download correctly (stopped short) and the Size/Time was miscalculated. I have seen this type of posted speed on dialup modems before, it is not the true speed I can promise you. |

2006-06-23 00:57:00 | I remember mucking around with my modem/connection settings the other day... | Wardog (6821) | |
2006-06-23 01:01:00 | kb or kB ? also what are you measureing it with? IE always reports it incorrectly and also if parts of the file are uncompressed it will download fast.

2006-06-23 01:23:00 | It starts downloading to a temp location before you specify the location, but only starts the timer when you specify where to download it, so it thinks it's done the first part in next to no time, if I recall correctly. | roddy_boy (4115) | |
2006-06-23 03:10:00 | Lol just happened again. I was downloading phpBB3, and it went at 120kb a second for a few seconds, then got slower. EDIT: kB, as in kB per second. And im using FireFox, not IE. IE suxx. I finished a 1.4mb file in like 18 seconds.
