466059 2006-06-25 13:57:00 Is it possible to use the computer speaker (the one that makes the beeps at start-up) to play any other sounds, e.g. windows sounds etc. bpt2 (6653)
466060 2006-06-25 14:00:00 Not as far as I know, unless you connected it to your soundcard as a normal speaker.

Edit: I recall an old soundblaster 16 card I have has a connection for 'PC Speaker', I beleive the speaker in question could be connected to it.

What it would output is another question as I never tried it.

466061 2006-06-25 14:13:00 I failed to consider a built in speaker for my lcd monitor. What are then my options for getting some sound for calendar alerts (don't need music). I would rather not have a pair of speakers sitting on my desk. bpt2 (6653)
466062 2006-06-25 14:22:00 I have seen some internal powered speakers that sit in the 5.25" drivebay, these would probably suffice.

Infact the exact same thing is on trademe (www.trademe.co.nz)

the audio cable routes out the back of an unused pci slot cover/port cover and plugs into the soundcard

466063 2006-06-26 10:42:00 There is also a wee prog available from M$ called speaker.exe (IIRC) which I think is supposed to do as you require. Try searching the M$ site for 'speaker.exe' or speaker. Robin S_ (86)
466064 2006-06-26 11:11:00 The original Speaker.exe program works by emulating a soundcard (probably the SB16), however It was only for DOS/Win3.11

A newer version is available (download and instructions from microsoft here (support.microsoft.com)) however it only supports 95/98/98SE and Win ME

However, it seems that it only plays .wav files, and only through sound recorder.

466065 2006-06-27 02:45:00 If you aren't using the sound card for anything (you say you don't want speakers on the desk) try disabling it.

I suspect that Windows will use the motherboard speaker for its Windows sounds if there isn't a sound card available.

466066 2006-06-27 06:00:00 Yes, if the soundcard is disabled (or not installed) windows will beep the PC Speaker instead.

I think this is only for when windows would normally play the 'Critical Stop' error sound, though
