466425 2006-06-28 04:02:00 Gigabyte boards are generally solid and offer more bang for the buck, I would say don't get Asus they fail more. Everyone has there own opinion on brands epecicialy resellers. The reality is both Gigabyte and Asus are going to be more reliable than brands like Albatron or Asrock etc

I would also back dual core, be aware that Intel release Conroe in less than a month that will blow the AMD dual cores out of the water for both price and performance (and overclocking) if every preview to date is correct, (and I am very much traditionally an AMD fan BTW). But if you can't wait i would definitely go dual core AMD as Vista for one will benefit from it.

466426 2006-06-28 05:41:00 Firstly - Hi there, new to this forum.
Have you tried pricespy, at the least, it will give you a feel for whether you are getting a good deal. The shops I have used in Auck, and all have been very good, are XP Comp, ETC and Compulink. Also, for a good comparitive look at graphics card performance, look at tomshardware.com, where they have some good charts, both VGA and CPU, look on the right hand side. That is my 2c.
I have just finished a shuttle XPC build and for total cost of $1800, I got following specs:
XPC SK21G
Athlon 3400 754
1GB DDR 3200 @400
Multi Card Reader
DVD Lightscribe Multi Burner
LG 8ms DVI 19" LCD
X800 XT AGP 256MB Vid Card
Seagate 300GB 16mb SATA drive

Rationale for 754 was the much cheaper cost of XPC, and the fact that it runs plenty fast for everything I do including games. It will prob get converted to an HTPC at some point, but I am picking this will last for a a good couple of years as the family's main PC. If my wife wasn't so super keen on the small/quiet SFF PC, I would have gone dual core. In 2 years time, I will do the whole process again. I must have built about 6 SFF pc's for people now, they are pretty potent if you build them using good components.

466427 2006-06-28 07:33:00 Hi
My 2 cents.....
Gigabyte/Asus, 1st Teir board manufactures, no problem!
AM2, the cpu is not bandwidth hungry like P4, so no noticeable advantage even with DDR2800, it doesnt come come to saturating DDR. With the 939 socket price drop next month, dual core 939 is the way to go, and they have good overclocking headroom just like their single core brothers so you'll have years of service.
2Gb is better than 1Gb but whatever you get, get 2 identical sticks.

G71 core 79 series nvidia if you can, oh and make sure to get a good power supply, @ least 450W.

read this, seems you're going to need pci-express not agp for graphics, i have a 256MB 7900gt pci-express video card, MS have added a performance tool to vista's control panel, and it came out at 5.9/10.... so imagine those running on a 6600gt or less

sata 2 with ncq (ideally 16MB Cache)

you'll need at least 2GB of RAM (i have 1GB ie 2x512MB DDR2 sticks and it runs heaps slower than XP)especially if you are planning on using the 64bit version. and at least a 256MB pci-e video card, pci-e card as everything previous to vista, that is, xp/2000/ME/9.X used bitmaps to render graphics, where vista uses vector graphics, so in resizing vectors it has to do a whole heap of recalculating to prevent an image from pixelating.

don't think you are going to be happy upgrading your old but still new to you PC to Vista, and i bet a lot of pc's which are sold retail which claim to be "Vista Ready" wont be!

466429 2006-07-24 06:59:00 Ok I revived my thread, after waiting for the AMD price drop - some huge cuts there!

Now I'm looking at a 4600+ AM2 for about $500 instead of yesterdays $1000

Now that the prices are so low - whats the deal with Conroe processors???
I'm definately not a fan of Intel, but if they are really good compared to AMD I'd give them a go.

Are they not called conroe Processors here but "Duo"s ???

466430 2006-07-24 09:01:00 Hi, as I said earlier in the thread, AM2 are NOT a viable cpu, NO noticeable advantage over the 939 socket, so save $300 dollars for the same processor and spend it on a powerfuller graphic card or more RAM, you can never have enough, well, 4Gb with 32bit O/S...lol SolMiester (139)
