466946 2006-06-28 23:17:00 Got a new SATA-II HDD yesterday, installed and working fine.

However, I have a question about the SMART status. Looking at the stuff in everest, I get these results:

I notice 3 of these have very high readings, I'm not sure if these are bad but my maxtor 6L200M0 seems much better:

The seagate seems to work fine, with no odd noises, Seatools reports everything as fine but I still think it could be dodgy. can anyone confirm this??

466948 2006-06-28 23:49:00 I haven't followed SMART codes since IBM Deathstar days but then you couldn't compare raw numbers even between different models of the same brand. There were groups collecting sample data from drives in an attempt to find out what was "normal range" in the absence of any manufacturer's data. If Seatools says it's fine why not believe Seagate, they probably know best. PaulD (232)

466950 2006-06-29 00:01:00 As far as I know, the SMART capability needs to be enabled in your mobo's bios settings. Once that is done the HDD will make use of the SMART features it is capable of.

466951 2006-06-29 00:13:00 the bios on my current board (MSI K8N SLI-FI) doesn't have any S.M.A.R.T. options to enable/disable but since I can get the info via everest, I guess it supports it :confused: Agent_24 (57)

I gave up on SMART for anything other than temperature as I've also had a sudden failure with no SMART warning. There have also been lots of Compaqs etc that have had false warning problems that have had to be updated away.

466953 2006-06-29 01:11:00 SMART will warn if the disk is going to fail. It won't tell you anything about the controller from what I've seen.

Your drive is working fine, its not noisy, its new. I think you are being paranoid.
Your results don't even show any fails.

Obviously regardless of any hard drive status you should have important data backed up somewhere.

If so, your drive has a 5 year warranty so stop worrying and enjoy it.
