| 466756 | 2006-06-27 17:52:00 | I have a pentium 3 dell latitude laptop.. so it isnt ancient but it isnt new.. so anyway i recently upgraded it from win 98 to win xp pro... it being old came with a 5.58 gig harddrive witch i thought would be fine just because im gonna load win xp + sp2 on.. and i did and now i only have 596MB left on my HD!@#?? i have no programs installed in my program files folder and i opened add and remove programs and all thats in there is win xp uninstall and sp2 uninstall... this is really bother sum where did my space go? EDIT: id be willing to let someone come onto my pc with remote desktop asistance and fix this... and i know winxp doesnt take up 3 gigs (including sp2) this is really maddning.. :yuck: |

| 466757 | 2006-06-27 19:27:00 | Welcome to PressF1 :) Did you do an upgrade (keeping previous data) or use the disk to do a fresh installation? I'm guessing that the upgrade has backed up your old Win98se as well. It does this so you can uninstall XP and roll back to Win98se without having to do a fresh installation. You can find more information and a guide how to remove the backed up files here (support.microsoft.com). |

| 466758 | 2006-06-27 20:10:00 | i did the upgrade because it looked faster but when i saw the installation backing up 98 i smacked myself in the face because it took longer... but its like theres somthing on the c drivie but it isnt in there like it has to be big ... i tried looking for it and even showinig hidden files didnt help.. maybe when i upgraded to xp the installation backed up 98 to a hidden partition? EDIT: jen how big is the sp2 and winxp pro uninstallation files.. my mate tells me they both should be close to 1.80 gigs almost? if i get rid of that and turn off virtual ram to keep windows from using some of my HD for ram then i think my problem is sloved? jen i went to add remove programs and i clicked on win xp uninstallation and i clicked remove backup of previous OS and it did now i have 889MB :badpc: grr there has to be somthing else.. i turned off viirtual ram because my pc already has 512 built in which is decent :annoyed: my dad sugjested that maybe since its a fat32 HD :waughh: that maybe theres one of those illegal partitions or what ever that win xp makes on fat32 HDS he said its an error but should of got fixed when i installe SP2 |

| 466759 | 2006-06-27 23:33:00 | Your best bet would be to save any data you want to keep, format the HD with NTFS, do a clean install of XP & SP2. Just XP Pro + SP2 will take up about 2.5GB |
