worst case " you have lost the data off you xp partition"
did you backup before preforming this 2000 install.

as a rule when setting up a micosoft dual boot system you should always install the older os first working to the newest ie in your case 2000 then xp.

I suspect that that by installing 2000 after xp, 2000 has over written the xp boot loader. as xp was not around when 2000 was writen the 2000 bootlaoder doesnt know about xp therefore when 2000 was installed and the 2000 bootloader was setup it ignored the exsistance of the xp os.

To check if the xp data is intact run a linux live distro such as knoppix that will allow you to browse your partions and check your data. once the exsistance of the xp partion is confirmed we'll take the next step

We need to know want partition xp is setup and which one 2000 is setup on ie xp partition 1 2000 patition 2

another question when 2000 is up and running do you have more than partion

467337 2006-06-29 23:42:00 If you installed 2000 into it's original partition you should be OK, it is as Beama said old OS first, try this rebuild method for boot.ini it should fix your problem if the XP stuff is still intact.
