1404170 2015-07-06 03:27:00 Just received a letter from Spark that my street is ready to go full fibre!

1. They are offering new faster fibre plan 200/20 (unlimited) for $129 per month including land line. Notice that upload has reduced to 20Mbps from 50Mbps.

2. They will be ditching the copper landline from 1 November 2015, it will cost xtra to keep my copper landline if I so wish.

3. They are giving a new cordless DECT phone (plugs straight into my Fibre ONT) free if I ditch the copper land line.

Sounds like a good deal.

Question: Anyone knows what's a DECT phone?

Here's my interpretation:

I would think that it's just a cordless phone which is connected to the ONT. I have my own cordless phone which has 3 handsets and works great (serves my needs). I'll have to throw away my present cordless phone unit and my other land line phone unit as I won't be able to use the copper line sockets anymore (unless I am willing to pay extra for the copper line).

That also means I can only have ONE phone unit in my home.

Will have to contact Spark to clarify.

1404171 2015-07-06 04:06:00 DECT is just a acronym for a particular cordless phone technology. Nothing to do with fiber or your ONT or anything. There are tons of cordless phones than will run multiple handsets off one base unit - perhaps look into getting one of those. Uniden have some that run on 1.8GHz which are pretty sweet. wratterus (105)
1404172 2015-07-06 04:21:00 Yup I've got 2 Panasonic dect phones here. The ones that will still go when you get a power cut. I think you can hook up 5-6 of them from the main handset.

Once you register them on the handset

Sounds like **** to me.
So take up fibre or else....and pay more. It's over my budget - a lot.

1404174 2015-07-06 04:58:00 You may not need to stop using your current phones, depending on how it's implemented by the ISP. In the two installations I have seen (Actrix and I think vodafone) a normal landline phone is connected to the ONT. With a bit of rewiring you can feed all your existing jackpoints off the ONT instead of from the copper line although it's possible it can't drive as many devices. dugimodo (138)

I just ordered spark fibre, and had to select the extra $49 option for my existing phone jacks in other rooms to the ONT to be wired up (don't want phone in same room as ONT).

1404176 2015-07-06 05:44:00 You mean, I can still keep my internal house phone wiring, use my existing phone sets? They can connect my internal wiring to their ONT?

I have a phone jack in every bedroom.

Yes, that's what they told me.

1404178 2015-07-06 06:00:00 You phoned them already?

I called them earlier but the robot put me on hold for too long and I hung up!

1404179 2015-07-06 08:24:00 I think the deal stinks.

Pay a lot more now for fibre, or have them take the copper alternative away from you and force you onto the dearer plan.

I suspect if you wait they might be forced to offer you a more comparably priced fibre alternative when they disable the copper network.

I suppose it depends how much you stream or talk. I do neither, so for me there's no plus side to their offer, but $40 less in my wallet each month.
