| 1393862 | 2015-02-09 19:11:00 | Win 7 home premium can't backup over a network so I use Active@ the paid version, which works flawlessly and is quite cheap I think I paid about $50 5 years ago, I still get updates and now use it on a Win 8.1 desktop as well. Would do an image and it went thru thru process and said it had completed successfully - but then when I went to restore the image....FAIL I wouldn't recommend it to anyone now... Whereas with Active@ I have never had one failure yet! (touch wood lol) |

It cant backup over a LAN, so it has to either be to an external HDD or a another type of storage attached to the computer. If you make an image, and have to replace the HDD for what ever reason, it HAS to either be the same size or larger than the original. Lets say you have a 1TB drive originally with 200GB used, and that fails, but you only have a 500GB to replace it with -- Wont work even though there may be plenty of space on the drive. |

| 1393866 | 2015-02-10 02:03:00 | The windows one is also a bit slow and a little awkward to restore. Within it's limitations though it works very well. I sometimes set up a spare drive internally and schedule regular image backups to it. Yes it's not the best Idea but I'm only looking to protect against hardware failure and anything is better than nothing. I have had a lot of issues with both acronis and active@ (which I also purchased) but I think that's more to do with the fact I most often use them to clone an OS from an old drive to a larger new one rather than to create/restore an image to the same drive which seems more reliable. I'm currently experimenting with storage spaces on windows 10 using 4 x 2TB WD Green drives in the equivalent of a RAID5 array and might see if I can get active@ to back up to it over the network but even then that's not that convenient as I'd have to leave both PC's running at backup time for it to work. |
