1393295 2015-01-30 01:59:00 At risk of being called a racialist, have you noticed that most of the senseless crimes of violence are committed by a certain sector of the community with what little brains they have kept in their pants? mzee (3324)

............and is reflected in the prison statistics:

But better not let Susan Devoy read the stats else she will say........... "unhelpful, wrong and incredibly offensive to a lot of people" :banana

1393297 2015-01-30 03:24:00 Yep. A minority race that makes up 15% of the countries population represent over 50% of the prison population.

...but it's OK guys, it's not a race thing :-/

1393298 2015-01-30 03:36:00 If you look at the 2013 census results for ethnicity distribution in conjunction with the prison stats, then Asians are the most law abiding, comprising 12% of the population but only 3% of the prison population, whereas at the other end of the scale Maori comprise 15% of the population but with 51% of the prison population followed by Pacific Islanders with 7% of the general population and 12% prison population.

It is of course regarded as racist by many to actually discuss these figures :groan:

I see that Chill pipped me to it, I was a long time posting

1393299 2015-01-30 04:44:00 I don't think a free education plus hundreds of millions is enough, we should double it all and see if that works, though to be honest I have my doubts. Cicero (40)
1393300 2015-01-30 21:52:00 Have you noticed that it is racist to say that sort of thing about our coloured cousins but it's not racist to say the same thing about a white European New Zealander? Roscoe (6288)

it would be interesting to see those stats compared to the poverty stats or household incomes.

It would.
Google gives lots of hits on correlating crime and poverty, much of it opinion, but quite a few "scholarly" treatises too.

An interesting article by Stephen Franks www.stephenfranks.co.nz

A Ministry of Justice "Social Risk Factors For Involvement in Crime" www.justice.govt.nz

I suspect many criminals have a 'criminal gene' regardless of social factors or status, wealth or poverty. Whether this 'criminal gene' if it exists, is more prevalent in certain races I wouldn't know, one can only suspect................. :)

When I was a boy in Brum during the 1940s large sections of the population (including my family) lived in what would be classified as poverty by present day measurements, but that didn't appear to lead to widespread crime. Though if you believe the television series, the Peaky Blinders, Brum was over run by gangsters in the 1920s :)
