| 1393333 | 2015-02-02 19:20:00 | Im not opposed to foreign investment at all, Im opposed to foreign ownership. ;) Reverse the situation and try to buy similar freehold property in the countrys that have purchased here and see how you get on. As for money being siphoned off overseas, that has to be tightly controlled also and there are laws in place to do that. Even as a NZ citizen you are not allowed to carry more than $10,000 in cash out of the country without jumping through hoops. You see previous governments of both persuasions have recognised the dangers of what we are discussing and passed legislation to cope. However, our present government has chosen to exercise its rights and ignore the legislation. Following your line of thinking I guess it would be OK to open up our boarders and be overrun by boatpeople too. Moving onto the important spelling of clarifys/clarifies. It would appear it can be spelt both ways and most people would understand. Heres a screenshot from Wordweb. 6186 Finally, you assertion that: Oh, also - competition in a marketplace usually leads to lower prices for the consumer. Bring on competition! Really, maybe you would be good enough to give some examples to back your statement? |

Our electricity bills of the last 10 years give the lie to this silly axiom of the new right. The only people who'd call it a silly axiom are those who don't properly understand the concept ;) Our electricity market is hardly one which I'd call competitive. |

You did it again, really? I'm aware in some countries you can't buy property, and in others there are restrictions on it. But, then again, there are plenty of countries where you can. (As a side note, 'because this other country does it' is not a really good reason - there are plenty of things countries do I'm pretty sure you'd rather not have happen here in New Zealand). But to give a concrete example, foreigners can buy property in Malaysia. I'm not talking about walking through an airport with banknotes. I'm talking about foreign investment, which of course results in some profits (be the dividends or whatever) going overseas. Why are you opposed to land sales to foreigners, but not foreign investment? In both cases, some profits go overseas. As to competition leading to lower prices - the cost of cloud storage has gotten pretty cheap recently. It's not because the companies are nice ;) Also, remember when all NZ supermarkets dropped the price of their bread? Again, this wasn't about them being nice. If you don't shop around, you're a fool. If you do, and you still say competition doesn't work, you're twice the fool ;) |

Some foreigners who buy land here seem to have a bottomless pit of financial resources. Thus in many cases they outbid the locals, forcing up land prices generally, and distorting the NZ market. The NZ Herald reported that land values in Auckland's CBD have shot up recently, driven by foreign buyers. In no way is that in the long-term interests of New Zealanders. |

Well lesser authorities than your good self, on the subject of spelling, dont have a problem with it being spelt either way. 6189 Moving along. But to give a concrete example, foreigners can buy property in Malaysia. Of course they can, up to MYR1,000,000, a princely NZ$380,000 and then their rules kick in. Cloud Storage aye, the new commodity thats value all else should be measured against. Also, remember when all NZ supermarkets dropped the price of their bread? Wow, you really must expand on that. |

The apostrophe indicates a possessive, or if countries' it's a plural possessive. Double check and you'll see ;) Got a link to that about Malaysia? Only regulation I can see is a minimum figure of $194,500. Anyway, if you want another example, foreigners can buy property in Britain - as well as many other European countries I believe. As to the examples of competition reducing prices - I picked those two as they were recent and noticeable. In many cases, you don't know what you've got until you lose it. If you can't handle that, go cry me a river in a corner, I couldn't care :groan: As to my other statement - if you shop around, you're taking advantage of competition between businesses. To do that, and then still complain about competition not reducing prices, is stupid. |

Im going to have to get a ruling from the Apostrophe Protection Society" on this one . Moving along . . Anyway, if you want another example, foreigners can buy property in Britain - as well as many other European countries I believe . My challenge was for you to do similar deals in the countries covered in the link in the lead post . Malaysia and Britain werent mentioned there, but well add them in for the benefit of the exercise . (Clearly, an apostrophe has disabled your comprehension) :D So, which of the countries involved would allow you to purchase 13,800ha (size of Lochinver Station) of their land freehold or any equivalent deal to those mentioned in the article? |
