2015-07-06 08:59:00 | I don't understand this. I thought Chorus were installing the fibre network for UFB. Spark appears to be using their position to exclude other providers?? Quoting Chorus: "To kick things off you need to call your broadband provider and order a UFB-based service. If you live in a Rights of Way, apartment building or your business is based in shared premises you will need to seek consent from your neighbours, landlord or body corporate before we begin installing fibre. Your broadband provider will book a day and either morning or afternoon for our technician to meet with you at your home or business to begin the installation process." www.chorus.co.nz Once the network available, then presumably you can then go to any ISP who is offering a UFB internet plan ? (On principle I'd never go with Spark/Telecom again :) )

2015-07-06 09:22:00 | The deal sounds fine, but do you really need a 200/20 connection? You would probably be just fine with a 100/20 connection to save some $. | Alex B (15479) | |

2015-07-06 19:49:00 | My parents had that happen to them in the UK. Telecom over there disabled the copper in their area. My parents don't need and will never need a fibre connection for the 2 emails they send a week.. Total rip off. | gary67 (56) | |

My parents don't need and will never need a fibre connection for the 2 emails they send a week.. Total rip off. That is not what is happening here. Spark are saying if you move to Fibre, then you need to move to a VOIP phone service or it will cost you more (as it is costing them more via Chorus). I see no issue with this. |

2015-07-06 21:55:00 | There is no other alternatives, either I go fibre or pay extra to keep the copper. | bk T (215) | |
2015-07-06 22:14:00 | Sounds like **** to me. So take up fibre or else....and pay more. It's over my budget - a lot. It doesn't have to be that expensive. I assume that this is the unlimited plan with phone?? Actually I got the same letter for the M-in-laws place. It's $14 cheaper if the landline goes to fiber..

2015-07-06 22:42:00 | There is no other alternatives, either I go fibre or pay extra to keep the copper. The alternative is stay on ADSL. Pretty much all fibre ISPs provide the phone via VOIP now, this isn't just a Spark thing.

2015-07-07 00:30:00 | It is really pretty simple. Take notice of Alex B. There is a lot of rubbish about phones and UFB being disseminated, even by the ISP support staff. I've had several people tell me the ISP staff have said their old analogue phones won't work so they will need digital ones! That really confuses them. You can connect your old phone network into the ONT and all your current ones will work. The $49 fee to do this is to pay for the tech to plug your old lines into the ONT and disconnect the internal copper from the external line into the house. I have had fibre/voip for nearly three years and I merely disconnected the line-in at the master socket and ran a standard cable with RJ11 on one end and Telecom BT on the other from the ONT to a telephone socket. If a telephone socket is not close to the ONT, getting a tech to run cabling may be worth $49. These days fewer phone sockets are used because of the takeup of wireless phones. DECT is good - don't buy old 2.4GHz ones. But, like Terry says, you don't have to stick with Spark. Have a look around before deciding. Finally, go with fibre as it is more reliable and is where we are all headed. And certainly don't pay extra for the old copper phone feed. (Actually, Spark took 3 years longer to do voip than anyone else so you have to wonder what took them so long. They also took a lot longer to provide fibre which is why I went with Orcon at the time). Good luck with your fibre future!
