Well it is if you wish to look in all the nooks and crannies, but the other side of the coin is if you have a Gold Card you can get there and back free, plus a Bus Trip around some of the island. Either way its an island of contrasts from rich and poor, to genius and insane. :D |

2015-02-07 22:01:00 | I never been to and am planning a day trip to Waiheke Island next week . Is it recommended to bring my car over? Depends on how adventurous you are . Waiheke needs a cautious approach to driving . Most of the roads are steep, narrow and winding, with locals parking their cars on the side of the road, with no kerbs, and often just deep ditches marking the sides . The speed limit for the entire island is now 50kph and you wouldn't want to go more than that . The only straight piece of road is about 900m . If driving, most of your time will be spent watching for what's coming around the next bend - and your navigation skills need to be up to par (even with a GPS some of the roads can be confusing because they'll head in the opposite direction you want to get to but eventually turn around) . For these reasons, I'd recommend take one of the Island tour buses or all day passes . You'll get to admire the scenery, imbibe at one of the wineries without worrying about drink driving - yes, you can get breath tested when you least expect it - and leave the driving to the locals . Get to see the layout first, then later make another trip with your car to focus on the attractions what most interest you that you want to spend more time at . And with a Gold Card, it's free! Have a great visit!

2015-02-07 22:14:00 | Either way its an island of contrasts from rich and poor, to genius and insane. :D In a nutshell! One beachfront house at Palm Beach sold just before Christmas sold for $5m, less than 300m a friend lives in a modest $500k bach. Yes, the eccentrics abound there. One local artist spends the year painting, then three weeks of the year exhibiting in New York where he makes enough to support an almost jet set lifestyle. One of his favorite tales tells of how he likes to go out and about in bare feet. Once he was refused entrance to one of his own exhibitions in NYC because he wasn't wearing shoes. Off to the local convenience store where he purchased a can of black spray paint, painted his feet, and was allowed to enter ...

2015-02-07 23:06:00 | Yes it is possible to wind up On a track never crossed, cept by those who were lost as Banjo Patterson once put it. :) But to be fair, if you dont mind narrow roads and a few obstacles, then you should be fine. Maybe, if in doubt, start with the free trip and follow up with your own vehicle, if you so wish, on a later occasion? Dont forget to report back on your experience. ;)

2015-02-08 03:16:00 | Thanks B.M and WalOne. I think it's a suggestion to start with the free trip and follow up with my own vehicle on a later trip. I will certain try to report back after my trip, but it will be sometime next week, though. Cheers.

2015-02-08 06:27:00 | I seen a few changes since the mid 70's. Notably wineries that have appeared. So maybe visit Mudrick (www.mudbrick.co.nz/) (and the barrel storage and herb gardens, and also Stoneridge. (http:) One of the wineries has a northern lookout (can't remember which one, May have been the "wild" winery) to the open sea. Another is near a secluded bay with a bit of a cliff drop. Mudrick also has a good vantage "Peninsula" view. | kahawai chaser (3545) | |
2015-02-08 09:26:00 | I've only been there once and it was for work so I didn't get to explore much but the part I saw was nothing like what you guys are describing. At least some of the island resembles an ordinary Auckland suburb and I remember being very disappointed having expecting something more exotic. I did drive around a bit but only really had a half hour to kill waiting for the ferry. | dugimodo (138) | |
