468815 2006-07-05 08:42:00 Brand new HP Pavilion m7369a Media Centre, Intel Pentium 4 with 512 Mb SD Ram and 200Gb hard drive. Am on broadband and no problem with connecting and loading web pages when the computer initially boots and no problem if I remain active surfing the net. But, when I leave the computer connected but I am not actively using it, often when I return and try to load a web age it comes up with cannot locate server etc. Reboot and things return to normal..until the next time.
Any ideas and solution for this problem please?

468816 2006-07-05 08:48:00 How are you connecting to the ADSL - internal or external modem/router? Via USB or ethernet cable if external?

Some devices have a power saving option which will deactivate after X period of time.

468817 2006-07-05 08:59:00 Hi Jen
Thanks for replying
Connect via external D-Link DSL-540T ADSL Router. The problem was also apparent before I got broadband last week when I was on dialup for a couple of weeks.

468818 2006-07-05 09:28:00 Can you ping any websites after leaving your internet connection inactive for a short period of time? What firewall do you have on your computer?

Cheers :)

468820 2006-07-05 09:49:00 I had this problem on Xtra a while back. Telecom initially denied it was a problem at their end of course but no improvement with different routers either. It would happen for a few days to a week then be ok for a while. Telecom had no solution but sort of admitted that the connection was being dropped.

The only workaround that seemed to work was keeping a web page up that 'automaticly refreshed'... I think ones like NZCity do it.

Mine's been behaving the last few months.

Not much help, but you're not alone.

468821 2006-07-05 09:53:00 Zonealarm maybe the prob, it has a habit (like Nortons Firewall), of turning its proxy service off, which is annoying . And once this service turns itself off, you cant browse the net, until, u restart the service, or reboot .

The only way to fix it, is to go to control panel / admin tools / services, and highlight the proxy service entry for ZA .

Then double click on it, go to general tab and restart the service .

Which is one reason, I removed ZA .

468823 2006-07-05 10:08:00 I'm not sure what Speedy is talking about, but he generally knows what he is talking about

I'd try what he suggests, however I use Zone Alarm and for me it made no diff if it was running or not . :(

Symantec Internet Security and ZA uses / installs a service called a Proxy service . If you're using XP, you'll see this service, under control panel / admin tools / services .

This service comes into effect once you go to browse, with a browser .

And IF this service stops (which can happen) in both NIS and ZA, it'll also stop you using any browser (whether its IE, Opera, Firefox) .

You can still connect to the net, whether you're on dialup, or ADSL . And update thru programs, that have an update option in them . BUT, thats it .

You wont be able to browse, until you restart the proxy service .
