468447 2006-07-04 07:49:00 XP on my PC has just decided it won't boot into windows anymore, but it will into safe mode.

I have dont 2x system restore's, with no luck. I'm currently scanning with AVG and Ad Aware, but i'm not sure how long it will last as last time I got into safe mode, it restarted itself within 5 mins.

The boot procedure goes as far as the XP screen before the login screen, but then goes black and nothing else happens.

Help!

468448 2006-07-04 07:50:00 You mean the monitor turns off?

Have you checked your refresh rate and resolution while in Safe Mode?

[edit]Just noticed your comment about the PC rebooting while running under Safe Mode - this would not be caused by incorrect video settings.

468449 2006-07-04 07:51:00 AVG scan just stalled, nothing found with ad aware, restarting AVG scan now. pine-o-cleen (2955)
468450 2006-07-04 08:09:00 Sorry, no the monitor doesn't turn off .

I think what is happening is it is stalling in between the xp loading screen and the login screen . ie, it's not getting to the login screen .

I've started it in safe mode again, and I'm now running an AVG scan, has been going for 17 mins so far withou restarting, hopefully that was an unrelated one off!

468452 2006-07-04 08:35:00 Ok, AVG is done and has come up with a read error on Partition table and on Boot sector of C:. pine-o-cleen (2955)
468453 2006-07-04 08:58:00 virus? or the beginnings of hard disc failure? how old is the drive straitjacket (9698)
468454 2006-07-04 09:11:00 It's 3 years old approx. pine-o-cleen (2955)
468455 2006-07-04 09:21:00 getting read errors on partition atable and boot sectors isnt usually a good thing I would be scanning the disk for errors (wether scandisk or another utility is up to you) about now finding out why avg couldnt read those areas....if there are no errors on it probably isnt the drive...but flakey restarts when doing disk intensive activity can often precede hdd failure straitjacket (9698)
468456 2006-07-04 09:37:00 Ran check disk and it has deleted some 'corrupt file segments' and some 'index entries' .

So . . . should I be backing up all my important stuff?
