468893 2006-07-06 00:02:00 Hi, I got my self a nice cheap smallish mouse to use with my laptop, not realising it was a ps2 mouse and I needed a usb one. I bought a usb - ps2 adaptor but I cannot get the mouse to work on the laptop, even with the touchpad disabled.

Do I need some form of drivers?

Thanks.

468894 2006-07-06 01:26:00 The only USB-PS/2 adaptors I have seen have contained just "wires". They just connect two different plugs and sockets. USB is not a simple interface like PS/2. It requires a lot of intelligence at both ends.

Many mice are capable of using both PS/2 and USB. Thye have the intelligence for USB built in, and can see when they aren't connected to a USB port on the computer. They just switch themsleves down to the simple PS/2 protocol, using the same four wires. They need the adapter only to fit the other type of connector.

USB-serial and USB-parallel adapters have intelligence for protocol conversion.

You'll have to find a USB mouse, I think. ;)

Unless the box says it is for both PS/2 and USB, it isn't. That's not the sort of feature manufacturers keep secret. ;)
