470056 2006-07-11 10:37:00 No, we have one isp at present, and both go online under my name and password. We would most likely change to Xtra if we went broadband, cos with being rural, I thought that would be the most reliable for where we live. I get tolls from telecom, and no one else has been able to match their price for ringing CHCH, so don't want to change my toll provider.

So at the moment you have two computers connected via a dial up modem and I guess you have one phone line provided by Telecom. At this time you cannot both get online at the SAME time. The reason for this post is to elucidate more information.

Have you contacted Xtra to find if your phone line can be enabled for Broadband?

This is the first check you should do.

470057 2006-07-11 11:01:00 Yes, have checked re telecom, and we can get broadband, but no guarantees till they get here how fast. But the green box is under a km away, and was updated about 2 months ago, so aren't worried about that.

Yes, we do connect, via dial up modem, at separate times.

470058 2006-07-11 11:09:00 You should be fine. When I did that test my results indicated that my ADSL speed would be on the slow side but it turned out better than I expected.

All you need now is a router and once Telecom connect you the rest is a breeze. :)

470059 2006-07-11 11:19:00 Ok everyone, thank you very much, as we have been seriously looking at broadband, but didn't even know where to start, short of seeing if we could get it,and I didnt' want them trying to sell me things we didn't need .

Once again you guys/gals rock!

470060 2006-07-11 11:40:00 Just don't go getting Xtra's 200MB per month plan. :(

Even 1GB might be pushing it, depending on your downloading habits.

470062 2006-07-11 20:30:00 just to add to what others have said....if you sign up with telecom they will give you free connection and free router...alll you will have to do is by a cheap ethernet switch (and associated cabling)to network your machines and the router together as the telecom routers are dhcp servers and will quite happily allow you to run multiple computers through it (that is if you dont mind cables running around the place) straitjacket (9698)

Wrong !!!

Xtra will give you a free modem, not a router, when you sign up. If you want a router then it will cost $60 for the self-install kit that contains a router.

See this page (jetstream.xtra.co.nz) for more info.

470064 2006-07-12 04:45:00 ah thats where youre wrong foxymx . . . telecom is currently shipping the dlink dsl502t which is an adsl router/modem combo for the soho and I know this for a fact because my friend signed up 2 wks ago and that is what he got shipped . . . and also I dont know how its possible but I have been running 3 machines through an ethernet switch to my dsl-302g with no connectivity problems . . . all machines able to access net simultaneously . . . . . dlink says its NOT possible . . . but I have had it running for a year so go figure

EDIT: just looked at the telecom page . . . THEY say its a modem . . . but dlink says its a router - . dlink . co . nz/Products . aspx?Sec=1&Sub1=1&Sub2=2&PID=48" target="_blank">www . dlink . co . nz - and its got all the right options in the setup menu in the device to confirm it9just to illustrate how dumb telecom are they say you can only hook up ONE pc . . . but its also got a usb connection for simultaneous use ) . . . have you ever had hands on with the 502t?? I have . . . . and the 504g listed on the telecom website is just the older model of the 504t which is just a 4 port version of the 502t

470065 2006-07-12 06:50:00 OK, you're right about Xtra wrongly calling Dlink's DSL 502T router a modem. I didn't actually follow that link thinking that Xtra wouldn't stuff something like that up.

As far as I can see, however, it has only one port for a single connection, not four ports like the other one has. So a switch will also need to be purchased to connect more than one PC to the internet through that router.
