471131 2006-07-22 12:31:00 Problem now is that I renamed Kernel32.dll (in safe mode) and restarted the pc again.

Use a DOS boot floppy or CD and rename the file back to what it should be, or get a Linux boot disk and do likewise. Do you know what you renamed it to?

Never rename any file without first finding out what it is and what it does.

Cheers

I renamed the Kernel something like thisisthetrojaneeekernel32.dll.

I'll check these out and see if it starts up again.

I'll keep you posted guys and thanks again.

471133 2006-07-22 19:37:00 Hi again,

I got to the dos prompt with a floppy to where it says-

A:/>_ and tried typing in a few commands, but they turn up as "bad commands".

Where do I go from this point to getting the desktop open again so I can access the Kernel32.dll file and rename it back to original ?

Thanks,
SSD

471134 2006-07-23 04:05:00 I resolved the crisis folks .

The boot disk came up with missing sys files, and my Windows XP pro wouldnt load ( cheers Microsoft !) so I couldnt reinstall either .
I was hearing a lot of angry noise about a Slave HDD being the only way forward in these cases and things like demagnetized screwdrivers and gave this a go~

I downloaded the "Setup Disks for Floppy Boot Install" . microsoft . com/downloads/details . aspx?FamilyID=55820edb-5039-4955-bcb7-4fed408ea73f&DisplayLang=en" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com
-6 setup floppy disks for installs of XP Pro and bypassed the damned restart loop that way using the disks .

Then I downloaded the file I renamed ~ " kernel32 . dll" , and reinserted it using the repair console available on setup and this codeline~

C:\>copy a:kernel32 . dll c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32

If you search for anything about Repair Console tutorials, you'll find the needed codes to use in each case .

It rebooted a treat, all my stuff is cool, and the freakin trojan is dead as a rat . (er . . one of they dead rats . . )

I'm one very tired but very happy man, and I wont be touching another dll file again in a hurry .

Passing on the resolved case for posterity .

Thanks for the assistance and good night all !!
