It may depend on the screen construction but it has been shown as a working method to diagnose it by others, on other forums. Of course as my systems never fail, I have not needed to use it....Well your method worked well for me today, minus the need for a torch. I had a LCD which looked like it was turned off, but still showed it was powered on. I took a close look at the screen and sure enough you could just make out the desktop icons etc on the dark screen.

It appears to be very useful for cases where its uncertain if its the screen electronics or the backlight.
