471719 2006-07-18 07:29:00 ok i want to know weather to go the conroe way or pentium D. i have a budget and want to keep the Motherboard, CPU, RAM and Graphics Card under about $1000 max ( is that resonable? ) also planning to buy parts between September and October. only for gaming such as Unreal Tornament, Half life 2, Counter Strike. thomas09 (10276)
471720 2006-07-18 07:54:00 It is overly optimistic to expect to get your shopping list within your budget. Conroe by itself will burn half that amount, and a video card easily the rest.

Mother board and conroe packages will likely be the best value for money if you wait a bit longer, but for $1000 you will struggle to include ram and a video card (assuming all new parts) unless you sacrifice elseware.

The flip side is Pentium D is effectivly an obsolete technology. It still performs most tasks well, but I expect the price for them will come down dramatically and you could get some great bang for your buck with this option. This will leave you in a far better position to get ram and a video card.

471721 2006-07-18 08:06:00 yeah i was thinking it wasnt enough. everyone is saying go conroe but i probably wont be able to afford it. im wanting to get a geforce 7600gs since its quite adequate for my needs. thomas09 (10276)

you want conroe and you can expect to pay $350 for the CPU.
$200 for a system board.
maybe $200 for RAM.
leaving a $200-ish for a good graphics card.

depending on the system board you may not be able to re-use your power suppily/case.

BTW the numbers above are very top of my head figures so no flaming thanks :-)

471725 2006-07-18 12:06:00 Yep, go Conroe. If you are buying a new pc, don't even think about anything else. (unless AMD seriously seriously seriously reduce their prices) mejobloggs (264)
471726 2006-07-18 20:32:00 (unless AMD seriously seriously seriously reduce their prices) AMD are said to drop their prices by 30-50% on the 23rd, or 24th, I don't exactly remember...

I was reading about the Conroes, and the top one, the X6800 absolutely owns the FX-62 :waughh: and what is more, it is only an extra ~$150, I know this is of no use to you, but for anyone else reading...

I must say, at this current point, my next rig will be a Conroe (and I am an AMD man :p)
