471636 2006-07-18 00:47:00 Hi and welcome to PressF1 :)

PCI and AGP are completely different slots, what is some more info about the PC? Make, Model, Brand? etc...

There is very little difference between ATI and nVidia, it is really just personal preference (I prefer nVidia)

We need to know more about the PC to help fully, if there is no AGP slot, there are still PCI graphics cards available(NOT PCI-E) , but these are not good for gaming...

What sort of games are you going to play? A full upgrade might be the better way to got...

471637 2006-07-18 00:50:00 im looking to play the next gen great games like bf2 or counter strike source. I really want to know if my regular pci slots can be compadable with pci express x16 Striker907 (10761)
471638 2006-07-18 01:02:00 What are more specs on the PC (CPU, Motherboard etc)?

No. there is nothing the same about PCI and PCI-E, this is a new standard that is capable of providing the bandwidth that a graphics card needs to have decent visual graphics, PCI cards CAN NOT do this. End of story.

You will need a whole motherboard upgrade (and CPU and most others) to run PCI-E graphics cards.

471639 2006-07-18 01:57:00 im just gunna forget about upgrading and just get a whole new computer because my motherboard wont support and i only have 200 wattz of power -_- and my ram isn't anything special too ( 768mb- upgraded) ill just wait untill vista comes out to get a new computer

471640 2006-07-18 05:15:00 You could just upgrade it.
new MB, CPU, RAM and Graphics card.
But if your drives are fine and any PCI cards - sound, modem, NIC etc, then an upgrade would be fine.

471643 2006-07-18 07:46:00 Difficult to tell from your post, but it sounds like you have a low end Dell system and w/o meaning to be presumptious or rude it is unlikely to run the games you seem to be interested in .

To run top end games most gamers build their own rigs and these don't come cheap . You could probably get reasonable performance from a current off the shelf mid-range pc and have at least 1G ram (2 is ALOT better for many games) and upgrade the video card (assuming it has 1 to begin with) with a mid range nVidia 7600 or similar . This will be a reasonable compromise between cost and performance .

Putting this in perspective though, I have begun spec'ing my new gaming rig for the vanguard release and it is already pushing 4k (excluding screen) . I am awaiting news on the availability of the core 2 "conroe" chips before I begin the build, which includes 4Gig ram, 2 10,000rpm raptors and 4 GPU's by way of twin 7950 SLI 1G cards . This is NOT necessary by a long shot, but it gives you some idea of where a games rig can lead .

CPU performance is not so critical (generally) but budget for at least 1G ram (minimum) and the best video card you can afford .

Incidentally, I am guessing we can write off the better part of 1 gig ram with vista despite claims to the contrary (anyone remember the claims made before xp?) and having a duel core chip should help protect gaming performance from vistas dinosaur footprint .
