471570 2006-07-17 10:33:00 Hey all.
I just purchased a Linksys WAG54G modem/wireless router for my block at a hostel uni. The block is 3 stories high (made from those big bricks) and 12 on each floor. I was hoping to put the router in a central location so everyone in the block would receive the signal.... but this was not the case. Its probably only covering a 1/3 of teh block.

SOOO... what i'm wanting to know is if theres a way for me to 'boost' teh signal. or maybe making an extension cord for the antenna and having a splitter so i could have more than 1 antenna?? possible? or am i dreaming?
The router currently only has one antenna, and i read somewhere it has mounts for two, so i'm up for any thing.

Or is there something i can do with software? Or even cosmetically (mirrors and smoke?!)

Cheers
Alex

471571 2006-07-17 10:41:00 Most probably better getting one of these Wireless-N routers / adapters (dse.resultspage.com 6f5&site=&w=wireless-n&submit.x=0&submit.y=0)

Expensive, but better range, and speed.

471572 2006-07-17 10:47:00 hey, cool, but don't really want to spend to much more!!

471573 2006-07-17 11:24:00 Something like this (www.dse.co.nz) would do the job. TGoddard (7263)
471574 2006-07-17 11:45:00 repeaters end up halving the total network speed doesn't it??
or is this a myth..

471575 2006-07-17 11:51:00 Note that in NZ it IS legal to use home-made antennas, BUT, the transmitting device cannot be altered/modified in any way unless it is licenced - eg. you can't add a home-made amplifier to the router. somebody (208)
471576 2006-07-17 11:55:00 You can boost with a firmware upgrade. This (www.linksysinfo.org)is where you will find all the info you need, but alas there site is being upgraded over the next week. Rob99 (151)

I thought the limit was 100Mw, didnt think the could say you cant change your antenna. Rob99 (151)
471578 2006-07-17 12:19:00 you need this one - WRE54G Wireless-G Range Extender. i've set this up in quite a few big houses - works great. quarry (252)

I was told by a friend who is an electrician/ham radio enthusiast. He basically said that you can use any un-licenced antenna you want, but the transmitting device must be licenced (ie. not modified). Likewise, home-made amplifiers would be illegal, whereas just an antenna, wouldn't.
