471464 2006-07-17 04:33:00 Ok all those people that use Linuk,

1. Whats the best Linuk website to help people.

2. Is there a website that lists all the Linuk distro's and tells you abit of info on each distro, has a review on it,user comments on it etc.,a place to download the distro etc.

3. Whats the easiest/friendly Linuk distro to use,ie like a computer novice would use (Like:"I turned the screen on and nothing happens","Did you turn on the computer case". Oh do,you have to do that as well". :D

4. Is there any distro that you can update like how windows xp has a update button and is noice and easy,ie no command line or hard stuff to do to keep it updated and is easy to download and install new programes, like media players, codecs and other programes (like what you do with windows).

5. What Linuk distro do you use and why that one.

6. Any problems with Linuk,or your distro, like finding the computer hardwear (I heard ati graphic cards are not good or something).

The reason I am asking these questions is because there is so much info out there I would just like to narrow it down abit more from like a billon websites to maybe down to 10 or less if thats possible!!! :D

Thanks for any help in advance, and I hope this will help others out as well who are thinking about Linuk but are abit unsure of the unknown,(like a first date I guess).

471465 2006-07-17 04:51:00 So you want it to be just like Windows?

Unfortunately, the more it is made to behave like that the less use it will be . Microsoft can get away with their software because they spend a lot of money on it .

The first thing you have to remember is that it isn't Windows . Things are done differently, very often . Read the instructions .

You will have better luck finding about Linux if you don't search for "Linuk" . ;)

There is a hardware compatibility list for Windows XP . Not everything works with that . There are hardware compatibility lists for Linux too, but the best way to find out about a peripheral is to use Google . "<make> <model> Linux" will usually show up any problems .

There is no "best website" . There will never be one . What I would find helpful might be utterly useless to you . And vice versa .

471468 2006-07-17 05:29:00 you could start here for a general rundown (click on distros tab for different versions):

en.wikipedia.org

Ubuntu or Kubuntu are supposed to be good starters and I think both can be downloaded to run a 'live' version from CD so you can try it out without actually installing it.

www.ubuntu.com/

Suse Linux is supposed to be 'quite like Windows' with support for a lot of drivers etc... but it screwed my comp big time :(

Xandros Open Circulation Edition is pretty easy to follow for someone coming over from XP. I might be slightly biased because that is the Linux distribution that I use.

www.forums.xandros.com is a friendly site. The folks there - mostly from USA and Canada are enthusiastic and helpful. Of course, there are always some malcontents, but people like woodsmoke, davepet, and jimallyn are particularly positive.

Might see you there? I have a different username over there - jimwilk

471472 2006-07-17 06:02:00 Best is probably an Ubuntu wiki or forum (well for Ubuntu users).

distrowatch (http://distrowatch.com/) for comparing distros.

Debian is my distro of choice. Ubuntu sounds like yours.

There are quite a few problems with Linux .. except to have to learn heaps ...

Hopefully you will be oK with linuX.
