471383 2006-07-16 21:45:00 I'm brand new here but i need some computer help.
My computer was built by someone else and right away I
noticed the autoplay window popping up. So we called him
over and he fixed it... temporarily. In the past month
(a year after the problem originally occured), its been
happening all over again. I searched all over, tried Tweak Ui,
but that only masked the problem, it would still interrupt programs
that i was running. I tried the microsoft auto play wizard application,
it found a problem with autoplay but couldn't fix it. I've run about 16 different registry cleaners, spybot search and destroy, avg antivirus, and i've tried running the program(gpedit.msc or qpedit.msc whichever one is right) mentioned on a similar thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) on these forums but that doesn't exist on my computer. ANY solutions or suggestiongs would be appreciated.

471384 2006-07-16 23:33:00 Have you tried running HijackThis - no? Download and install it, run it then copy and post the resultant log back here. Greg (193)

471386 2006-07-17 00:40:00 Here's a partial info on the scan:

O8 - Extra context menu item: &AOL Toolbar Search - c:\program files\aol\aol toolbar 3.1\resources\en-US\local\search.html Nasty

I don't personally see anything that's too bad in the rest...just the AOL stuff is always suspect in my book.

Try it this way:

Turn off System Restore, reboot into Safe Mode and run HJT all over again....make the repair from there and reboot to normal to se if it went away.

Your problem might be hiding in a restore point! :badpc:

471389 2006-07-17 01:29:00 no luck,
its still popping up as i type
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Grantismo (10750)
471390 2006-07-17 01:35:00 Does it pop up while you are in Safe Mode...I would think not.....when you get back to Safe Mode, run the Task Manager and see what's running...if you've got Spybot S&D, use the tools to see the other running processes too....... SurferJoe46 (51)
471391 2006-07-17 02:25:00 Autoplay?, what, as in Cd autoplay? Not sure what you mean, however, if you right click your cd drive, go to properties, autoplay tab, and check your settings there. May help you. SolMiester (139)
471392 2006-07-17 02:52:00 OK . . got you now, and I am trying to cover both bases now:

Are you sure it is an autoplay box or just a box with a searching flashlight?

For autoplay,

Open My Computer .
Under Devices with Removable Storage, right-click the device you want, such as a digital camera or CD-ROM drive, and then click Properties .

On the AutoPlay tab, click the multimedia content type you want to change .

Under Actions, click the action you want Windows to perform when it detects the media type you selected .

For a box with a flashlight and the word "AUTOPLAY" in the blue bar on top of the card . . . . . .

Open My Computer,

at the top click Tools > Folder Options > View > and uncheck "Automatically search for network folders and printers"
