2006-07-17 08:03:00 | That was a rather curt reply to Graham L's helpful advice. I can't help sorry, as I use Linux.Agreed, he was just being straight to the point (and therefore helpful by not giving you the padded namby pamby version as others tend to do). I too am a Linux only user, don't use Windows (have no reason to). If I game I use Linux compat games (currently have quake 3 and UT installed), will look to WoW now that I have a job. Partitions: /boot, /, and a /shared (music only mounted from /home) Until recently I did have /home seperate. I use Gentoo, its stable, easy to use, and easy to configure (but then I have gotten used to command line). If you don't like command line, forget Gentoo.

2006-07-17 08:56:00 | Well I read his post and found nothing helpful. Quote by Graham L So you want it to be just like Windows? (I want it to be easy to work like windows). Unfortunately, the more it is made to behave like that the less use it will be. Microsoft can get away with their software because they spend a lot of money on it. (So making it easy to use like Windows the less use it will be.What the?)Microsoft can get away with their software because they spend a lot of money on it.(Get away with what? What are you talking about).(Sounds like a rant that does not go anywhere). The first thing you have to remember is that it isn't Windows. Things are done differently, very often. Read the instructions. (I know its not Windows,I asked about Linuk, and telling me to read instructions, what instructions is he talking about!!!The histroy of Linuk, the 1001 different Linuk distro's,1001 ways to use a 1001 different Linuk distro's.What instructions is he talking about!!!) You will have better luck finding about Linux if you don't search for "Linuk". (Yes I did that and like a million came up in Google,so I thought I would come to the friendly Pressf1 site for help.) There is a hardware compatibility list for Windows XP. Not everything works with that. There are hardware compatibility lists for Linux too, but the best way to find out about a peripheral is to use Google. "<make> <model> Linux" will usually show up any problems. (You have not recommended a "<make> <model> linuk" for me to use in Google. You have not talked about any Linuk distro for that matter as well.) There is no "best website". There will never be one. What I would find helpful might be utterly useless to you. And vice versa. (You have not even offered any Linuk website.) So Jen if you can see the helpful advice in that post then well done.I could not thats for sure, and I thought he was just trying to be smart or something or waste my time or whatever he was trying to do.Your reply sounds curt to me. :2cents:

2006-07-17 09:46:00 | Doh,my bad, must remember to learn to spell doh . You need to set your bios to boot from CD/DVD player first, so that when you put the disc in, turn off your comp and reboot the live CD will load up the Linux distro instead of Windows or whatever you're running . Jen can tell you all about it when you get that far :D

Still reading those websites at the moment and getting more info . Maybe try one a month or somthing, and see how it goes!! :D |

2006-07-17 16:11:00 | So you want it to be just like Windows? Unfortunately, the more it is made to behave like that the less use it will be. Microsoft can get away with their software because they spend a lot of money on it. Ok, this part is not so relevant to your question The first thing you have to remember is that it isn't Windows. Things are done differently, very often. Read the instructions.Very highly relevant, and a common mistake among Windows users who try Linux You will have better luck finding about Linux if you don't search for "Linuk". ;)Advice meant to correct you, and you were corrected in a later post yet didn't get offended that time There is a hardware compatibility list for Windows XP. Not everything works with that. There are hardware compatibility lists for Linux too, but the best way to find out about a peripheral is to use Google. "<make> <model> Linux" will usually show up any problems. Very relevant to hardware, more so in Linux that Windows. 99% of hardware is Windows compatible, lets say about 70% is Linux compatible There is no "best website". There will never be one. What I would find helpful might be utterly useless to you. And vice versa.Correct though not too relevant information to your original question. Every distro has a site, every reviewer has a favourite. No point taking everything to heart when reading these reviews. Linux is about trial and error. If you don't like one, then try another. Simple. Only you will know whats right for you. (not trying to start a flame war, this is an example).. Everybody raves about Ubuntu for instance; personally I find it lame, and prefer Gentoo. Others may dislike Gentoo and prefer Mandriva. Each to there own. But there is no point jumping down the throat of someone who is trying to give you good advice. Not only does that person [possibly] think screw you, but others may as well. Listen to those who have used it for a while (as Graham has), they are trying to prevent you from tripping at the same hurdles that they or others around them tripped up at.
