472340 2006-07-20 10:53:00 You have 'key words' which, ordinarily are in the main body of text on your website. Is it possible to have your website found under a word that is not used?

It's a branding issue. Commonly Genericization.

This is a subjective example...
Say I am manufacturing a flask that maintains hot water. Most people that look to purchase this item, are highly likely to search for Thermos Flasks. Thermos is my competitors company name. So, unethical as it may seem LOL. Is it possible to have my web hosting company slot in the word Thermos, without my having the word Thermos be visible anywhere on my website.

I have heard, that you can have embed key words on the frontpage of your site, that are not seen on the page itself.
It's called something like "html embedding" How effective would this be? Any help and advise would be most appreciated.

472341 2006-07-20 10:59:00 Have you had a look at Googles Ad Words where you bid for search terms, in your case Thermos.

Some webmasters have done things like deliberately hiding words e.g. having the same foreground colour as background colour but if you get caught, in Googles case, they will ban your site. BMW got caught doing some tricks like that.

That's bad. It's called keyword spoofing. Where you hide keywords on your page. Search engines such as google will actually ban you for doing that.

You’re sure? As I think my boss does that on our website.

Some people have told me that Google & a few of the other larger search engines dont read the meta tags any more? Is this correct?

472348 2006-07-20 14:34:00 No, that is correct. Meta tags actually carry very little weight with search engines.

Stu... Keyword spoofing... I am ashamed :p

472349 2006-07-20 14:35:00 There was a big thing in the news not long ago. I think it was Mercedes or BMW Germany. Google caught them for keyword spoofing and kicked them off the search engine. mejobloggs (264)
