472281 2006-07-20 08:27:00 I am really sick of media player.

I want a free alternative that will play everything, I can't even get media player to play standard movie dvd's, its driving me nuts.

Any suggestions?

472282 2006-07-20 08:37:00 A lot of people recommend VLC player, or there's Zoomplayer that does 'most' files (has nice clean interface, but I think you have to pay extra for version with WMP files capabilities) Shortcircuit (1666)
472283 2006-07-20 08:40:00 I did download VLC but I couldn't get it too work. DeSade (984)
472284 2006-07-20 09:00:00 You could try iTunes for music and video clips (though the latter isn't really iTunes' strong point). Use DVD software to play DVDs... maccrazy (6741)
472285 2006-07-20 09:02:00 I would have another crack at VLC - it's an excellent player, although for some users the settings can be a little complex ;) Erayd (23)

472287 2006-07-20 09:12:00 The reason that you can't play anything is because of DRM courtesy of MS. There are ways of removing it but cannot reveal on this forum, try googling remove DRM. zqwerty (97)

Whats DRM got to do with it, my dvd's are all store brought retail packages so I own them, not trying to burn them just want to watch... and the the other things media player refuses to play are things like clips from youtube etc.

472289 2006-07-20 09:28:00 Ugh.

The reason you cant playback DVD's is because you dont have a codec installed for playback of DVD's.

No media player will playback DVD's unless it installs the required codec (any dedicated DVD software will do this, it will enable other media players to use the codec), or you source and install a DVD codec from other sources, Or if you use a player that has its own set of codecs that are intergrated into the player rather then looking to whats installed in the OS (VLC is such a media-player)

Iwouldn't install the Apple gear, Firstly its not designed for what your after, and its one of the most piss-poor apps around.

Clips from youtube are flash video, Again its not the media players fault that your throwing files at it that i doesn't recorgnise. I enable FLV playback on my comp via media player and have a dedicated FLV player on my other rig, Waste of time, All I do now is run em through SUPER and encode em into an AVI/Divx.

Only takes a few seconds.
