2006-07-19 10:44:00 | I have a new acer laptop with WinXP home. Just got around to downloading an ftp program (Coffeecup free ftp) so I can update my websites. The laptop came with Norton Antivirus 2006, and uses the windows firewall. Trying to connect to my site, the ftp program just states 'connecting to', the status bar goes up, down, up down etc, and never connects. I can still connect on my old pc using ws_ftp le. I have copied the same ftp settings over to coffeecup on my new laptop. I have added the ftp program to norton antivirus, and set to 'permit all'. I have just checked the windows firewall settings and added the ftp program there as well, to permit access. I have searched the norton knowledgebase, and can't find anything else to try. any suggestions as to what else I can check?

2006-07-19 11:35:00 | Hello jessnz Welcome to PressF1 :) One thing you can try is temporally disable norton antivirus & see if you can FTP in to your site If you can FTP into your site with norton antivirus disabled then dump norton antivirus & find another antivirus programs ie: AVG etc see faqf1.net.nz tivirus_Programs for other antivirus programs or Do a Search of PressF1.

2006-07-19 11:37:00 | downloaded filezilla, used the same settings as on my other pc, and it cannot connect. any other suggestions? either I've got the settings wrong (which doesn't make sense because it works on my other pc), or there is something on this laptop blocking it.

2006-07-19 17:10:00 | sorry went to bed! up again with the baby now... its the windows firewall - reluctantly switched off first the antivirus, no change, and then turned off windows firewall, and it connected. so I need to dig around in the firewall settings again...

2006-07-19 17:29:00 | added port 21 to the exception list for the firewall and it now connects. i don't quite know the implications of that though, for the security of the firewall. | jessnz (10777) | |
2006-07-20 03:20:00 | You're not running an FTP server, so it should be OK. If you're concerned, just disable the port 21 again, and enable it only when you need it. You know how to do that now. :D | Graham L (2) | |
