471840 2006-07-19 00:03:00 Hello, thanks for any help you can give me in advance

BACKGROUND: I recently instaled Windows XP pro- Reformatted the HD (windows home erased) and then continued on with the instailation of Pro . Everything worked well- got into windows, plugged in my ADSL using the earthnet port- and nothing happened .

HOW I TRIED TO FIX IT: When I try to "add new connection" using the "new connection wizard" it said the connection should already be active (allways on connection)

My last resort was plugging in the USB cord and trying to connect through that . The computer asked me to instal the new hardware- I put in the Telstra big pond internet disk, it found a driver on there and then I could connect to the internet through the USB port .

PROBLEM: When using windows update, I get the following error:

0x80246005

Which is Network connection was not available

I am guessing that this has something to do with the computer connecting to the ADSL modem through the USB ports .

WHAT I NEED HELP WITH: how can I connect to my ADSL modem through the EARTHNET ports . I have never had this problem with home XP- I just plug the modem in and go .

471841 2006-07-19 00:35:00 'EARTHNET' ports?, havent heard of that one before!....LOL

I'm guessing you are refering to the 'Network Interface Card' connection aka Ethernet port.

As all connection details are held on the router all you have to do is ensure that the NIC is set to DHCP and working correctly.
So use the device manager in control panel. Ensure the device has no explaination mark next to it. Dont forget to service pack the XP Pro install either.

471842 2006-07-19 00:49:00 Thankyou so much for your reply .

I'm in device manager- The "earthnet controller" has a question mark next to it, When clicking on properties, it The drivers for this device are not installed . (Code 28)

This is the same for "multimedia audior controller"
"SM bus controller"

Where do I find drivers for these particular parts of hardware- However I'm mainly concerned with the "earthnet controller"

Thankyou so much .

471843 2006-07-19 00:52:00 The CD the pc came with originally, will have the drivers for ALL hardware. SolMiester (139)
471844 2006-07-19 01:05:00 Its definitely not called 'earthnet'

Sounds like you need to install some missing mobo drivers

471845 2006-07-19 05:15:00 There is no such port as 'Earthnet" (if there was, it would have something to do with the earth ;)) . It is 'Ethernet' .

Drivers are an issue here . When you reformatted, you deleted all drivers as well . That means your computer doesn't know what to do with some hardware . Time to dig out some CD's .

471846 2006-07-19 12:31:00 Ditto what others are saying - it's definitely a driver problem. The fact that so many are mossing (and noting which ones they are - audio and ethernet are often built into the mobo chipset) says that you haven't installed the motherboard drivers - install them, and all should be well.
