2006-07-19 23:44:00 | Howdy Well it definately DOESN't seem to be the RAM sticks. Tried both sticks in my sisters computer and they worked fine. Tried her RAM in my PC, same beeping error. (makes same sound if there is no RAM inserted as well) Tried inserting and reinserting the RAM sticks in different combinations to no avail. Keyboard also fine. I shall try Pctek's suggestion and try another PSU tonight when I get home. Ps. It is a ESC L7VTA socket A motherboard with an AMD Athalon XP 2400+ processor. cheers Ravage

2006-07-20 23:22:00 | Howdy I tried a diiferent PSU on my PC but the beeping problem persists. There is a long beep then about 4-5 second pause then repeats. I also tried my graphics card in my sister's PC and it worked fine, all the components seem to work fine. I guess that leaves a problem with the motherboard. Any way to ascertain for sure that it is the motherboard (short of taking it to a PC specialist)? If the motherboard does need replacing what kind of motherboard (socket A/462, so I can keep the processor) or motherboard/processor combo would people suggest, keeping in mind that I don't need the latest and greatest mobo out there, and I would want to keep my existing components where possible. onboard LAN and onboard sound are perfectly acceptable. Current specs Athalon XP 2400+ processor (socket A) 2 x 512 Mb 400 MHz DDR RAM 250 W PSU XABRE 400 graphics card 16x DVD-RW 40x CD-RW 80 Gb hard drive Cheers Ravage

2006-07-23 23:05:00 | Howdy Finally shifted all my useful hardware into sister's PC. It will do as a temporary (I hope) solution ;) Still no suggestions for a motherboard? Cheers Ravage

2006-07-24 01:42:00 | From what I can see there aren't too many Socket A motherboards around. Looking on Pricespy, there are a few Soltek still available with various chipsets. Various other places have MSI or Asrock - neither of which are known as quality mobos (though my MSI has lasted approx 3 years, I seem to have gotten a good one lol). I personally wouldn't recommend ECS (had one, lasted 13 months I think), as Im sure not many in here would either You may want to look at an upgrade too.. if at all possible

2006-07-24 04:38:00 | Howdy Unfortunately, when I got my PC (maybe 4 years ago, not long before PC company went under) it was a premade system and I didn't get a choice of motherboards. With what I know now I wouldn't buy a package deal again and I certainly wouldn't get an ECS board either ;) Ideally I don't want to get a whole new system as I'm currently saving for a laptop to use at my job (currently using another sister's laptop) but would still like a desktop system to use at home. I must admit, I also had a bit of difficulty finding a suitable motherboard, my local PC places seem to all have modern mobos with pci express but not AGP slots, DDR2 ram not DDR and SATA but not ATA connections ;) cheers Ravage

2006-07-24 07:02:00 | Yeah it took a while to track down some older boards where I work. We had to ring around a few places before finding that one branch of pbtech had something suitable. And one was DOA :badpc:

2006-07-24 13:18:00 | Tell me about it ;) Was offered a frre board from Uni, just throwing them away, however it would have meant a serious downgrade in proccessor to use it :'( Ravage

2006-07-24 21:44:00 | Any way to ascertain for sure that it is the motherboard (short of taking it to a PC specialist)? well you already have done what is necessary.......generally theres No particular 'test' to tell if a motherboard is dying/dead.......simply a process of elimination which you have already done.....as for socket A mobos.......look on trademe theres still new ones for sale there.....
