472472 2006-07-21 03:19:00 Any help would nice, I am running Win98V2 and yesterday the computer decided it wanted to start in safe mode - OK, but all's well except the monitor has a 10mm black gap around the outside. I had a change of settings and only managed to get the icons back to small. Please what simple thing will fix the problem, I am not all that experienced in setups so not to tech please.

472473 2006-07-21 03:27:00 There are some buttons on the front of the monitor. Push them.
They have various settings that control things like brightness, contrast, horizontal and vertical size and position. Adjust those so that it is filling the whole screen and eliminating the border.
Presumably you fixed the problem that caused it to go into safe mode?
As for small icons, you mean you changed the resolution back up to what it was before?

472474 2006-07-21 04:55:00 Windows has two settings for icon size - large and small. The resolution can stay the same. It could be that. pcuser42 (130)

Is it still in Safe Mode? You didn't say if you got it back to normal or not. That could affect display size.

Cheers

472476 2006-07-21 09:57:00 Some monitors have a "zoom" function. This may be easier if it is available. RandomCarnage (9359)
472477 2006-07-21 10:43:00 Change the refresh rate.

The black border so I've found out can appear if this is too low.

Change it to 75/80/85.

video card drivers have gone awol. reinstall the video card drivers.

472479 2006-07-21 12:27:00 safe mode is not the long run solution.

in safe mode your resolution rate is usually lower due to the generic driver, because many modern monitors remember the settings for each different resolution rate + refresh rate combination, and your current combination in safe mode may not have been adjusted before.

go back to normal mode and see if anything is wrong. if cannot go back to normal mode, you can try system restore.

I agree with you. Just my 2 cents worth.

Maybe it is in 256 colour mode. At this time we do not know if the monitor is CRT, which I suspect it is, or an LCD.
