472984 2006-07-23 12:45:00 Hi there. How do you people deal with huge amounts of documents? We have a few computers in the local network and finding a particular document sometimes becomes a nightmare... standard windows search definitely doesn't help... Baxter (10780)
472985 2006-07-23 12:50:00 Hello there, welcome to PressF1. :)
To start with, you should sort your documents right at the very beginning. Have you checked out Google Desktop yet? Upon installation, it will index your files, making searching for them easier whenever the need arises.

Cheers :)

P.S. Google Desktop URL -> http://desktop.google.com/

472986 2006-07-23 14:56:00 Right on, James!

Just letting Baxter know that Google Desktop needs a little time to get al the files indexed the first time . If the collection is very larger, it will take a while to get them all collated . This also depends on the RAM size and processor speeds too .

Once it's done though, searches for the files will be done from the normal browser search bar . Just type in the files you want to find and they will appear at the top of what looks like a normal online search, with the online search below them .

You can use Boolean or wild-card searches for the files too; they are all supported .

472988 2006-07-24 03:42:00 I tried AVA thanks to someone posting about it (maybe you, Vince??) and I think it is tremendous. It's certainly low overhead as I never notice any indexing activity. It may not be for everyone, but if it doesn't appeal you can always delete and try another. linw (53)
