472636 2006-07-21 14:09:00 Hi
I do alot of video editing on my system. [Link to my system specs is in my signature]. well today all of a sudden i noticed a big rise in the temperature it climbed up to 80 ish. It restarted automatically before i did anything. i was guessing this was because the hot air blower under my desk. but then i shut everything down opned my case and cleaned all the dust including the CPU cooler. i put everything back made sure all the fans are working then fired up my system. went to bios settings - hardware monitor - checked my temp. CPU was 100 degrees and system was 29. now the CPU temp was dropping but it would go under 95.

What should i do?

472637 2006-07-21 21:27:00 I am surprised your processor still runs if it reached 100 degrees....they usually have a meltdown before that...check if your cpu fan is actually spinning..if it is, perhaps you might need to reseat the heatsink with some new thermal interface...also have you tried to overclock it? raised the cpu voltage at all?? because if you have you probably nee da better cooling system to compensate for increased heat. All I know is you shouldnt try running it when it is hitting those temps. The other possibility is that your temp sensor has gone awol..although I've never seen that happen. straitjacket (9698)

your cpu.

Yeh i did fiddle with the voltage using msi software CoreCenter. but i changed it back to default now. but now my problem is whenever i try to encode video using TMPGEnc my tem clims up to 75 degress ish. thats not normal is it?.

Regarding what happens when it overheats, don't be too pancicked - the CPU will almost always cause the system to crash or freeze well before "meltdown" or any significant damage occurs.

472641 2006-07-22 00:57:00 Put your finger on the heatsink and see if it is indeed as hot as the temp monitor says it is. zqwerty (97)
472642 2006-07-22 02:29:00 Put your finger on the heatsink and see if it is indeed as hot as the temp monitor says it is.LOL, good idea, just be careful if it is hot :p The_End_Of_Reality (334)
472643 2006-07-22 03:10:00 You can hold your finger on an object for about a second if its temperature is less than 70 degrees C. If smoke rises from your finger, it's probably too hot. Graham L (2)
472644 2006-07-22 07:14:00 One other question would be did you get the temp value from the msi software or the bios, because those software utilities are notoriously unreliable on reported sensor readings...if you havent I would be checking actual temp in the bios, or using something like everest to check while you're encoding. Another question would be what is your idle temp showing ? straitjacket (9698)
472645 2006-07-22 09:21:00 Could it be that the reading you are getting is faulse??? Might be that the CPU isn't actually getting that hot .. Maybe the term. is faully ... Pourhommenz (104)
