473285 2006-07-25 01:55:00 I recently upgrade Zonealarm and let it start afresh ie . block most stuff until I allowed it .

Well I used to get a pop-up which gave me a choice as to whether to allow an outgoing connection or not . Now all I get is a notification that a process has been blocked . No choice! And when I try to find the process in a list so I can check it out - I'm blessed if I can find it .

Anyone else had any problems? My theory is that Zonealarm is becoming more restricted to encourage purchase of Professional .

I'm tempted to try Kerio or just use Windows firewall because I'm behind a router anyway . I haven't used a thirdparty firewall on my laptop for a year now and maybe am blissfully ignorant but there is no evidence of hacking or malware installation .

Windows Defender, Spybot, Adaware SE Professional, and AVG . XP Pro SP2 .

473286 2006-07-25 02:33:00 Can't say I've noticed any problems.
Why update it? I am using version 4 still, no problems at all, and no need to change either.
I have installed the new free version for a few people lately and haven't come across anything like you have said.
I can come and have alook for you if you want.

473288 2006-07-25 02:45:00 Thanks Pctek. Maybe I've got the options wrongly ticked or something. It used to be straightforward but then again I only look at Zonealarm once every 6 months or so which means I forget the settings. Winston001 (3612)
473289 2006-07-25 02:50:00 Maybe you are using high in program control.
Try use manual to set permission yourself.

473290 2006-07-25 03:01:00 I don't want to start the whole router/software firewall thread off again, but really you don't need Zone Alarm behind your router with everything else you have. Apart from having a different anti-virus and the fact I have Pest Patrol, you have the same set up as me. If you really think you need a software firewall then Kerio is very good. Zone Alarm is getting a bit bloated these days. Twelvevolts (5457)

it sounds like you have the sicurity alerts turned on, turn them off before they drive you nuts! also i suspect the reason you havn't seen any programs ask for permission is ZA by default allows standard programs (which i think sucks) access. check whats listed in program control.

473292 2006-07-25 06:29:00 ZoneAlarm really is a hunk of resource hogging junk, if you have never used another firewall you may think it is good and not relaise how much it lags your PC.

Get Outpost it is far superior, or Keiro as someone else mentioned. I tested both and Outpost seemed a little better, either is much better than ZA.

Unfortunately they don't have free versions anymore which is one reason why ZA is so popular. :(

eeer had a quick look, looks like your right, 30 day trial rubbish.

In that case I would still rather take my chances with Windows firewall, and updates opposed to paranoid slomo ZA.
