473151 2006-07-24 10:23:00 Hi there, hopefully someone can help as Outlook Express "help" tells me how to compress/backup, but not how to restore!

I've accidentally compressed my inbox (a box came up asking me and I was too quick hitting a button - incidentally anyone know how to stop this box reappearing all the time?)

Now I can't read any old emails but there's some I do need :(

I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to get it all back to normal.

Outlook Express 6 on XP

Thanks

473152 2006-07-24 10:37:00 The long way would be to re-setup your mail account - but that would be an extremely dumb way. If you are desperate to read your old e-mails, you can always rely on webmails.

Cheers :)

473153 2006-07-24 10:57:00 Emails should still be available to read even after compressing so it is possible that you have caused some damage somehow whilst they were being compressed if you can no longer read old ones . Outlook Express needs to be set to "Offline" mode whilst compressing for this reason .

All I can suggest is to try downloading DBXtract and extract the emails from the DBX folder . That may or may not work .

Let us know how you get on . There are a couple of very knowledgable forum members here who may have further suggestions .

473154 2006-07-24 11:52:00 The normal cause of lost emails is stopping the compacting process before it is finished . If it starts compacting never stop the process or do anything else in OE until it is finished as inbox mail may be lost .
DBXtract that FoxyMX mentioned may recover the mail .

If you have XP SP2, you will get a prompt to compact after 100 OE closings, which you should do . Then you should not be prompted again until OE is used 100 times .

Prior to SP2, you can disable automatic compacting .
OE->Tools->Options->Maintenance Tab .

You should not be storing messages in the Inbox of OE it is not designed for that .
Create another folder to store them in if they are important and you will be less likely to suffer lost mail in situations such as this .

473155 2006-07-24 11:57:00 I can still read my compressed emails. Why did you stop it from compressing.

Trevor :)

473156 2006-07-25 08:59:00 Thanks Trev, I spend a bit of my time in F1 reading through the posts both for experience and because if I have a problem with my computer you can be certain that someone else has already had it, it so happens that I also have just got a similar problem and was hoping for constructive comment from a senior member .

My wife and I have the same Email address and save our Emails to the shared folder, my wife clicked on compress OK and to her knowledge didn't didn't stop the compression and for some reason all the local folders have been closed and new folders produced except for the deleted mail folder . We are also not able to open the old Inbox folder, OE just opens the new folders . Also the compress mail box comes up every time my wife closes OE .

I repeat comments passed before, how about giving junior members a fair go if you don't have a constructive comment don't clog the system .
