473172 2006-07-25 06:38:00 Don't be put off by the few members of this forum who are against all high profile companies, or software. There are a lot of less argumentative members who are quite happy to use Norton programs. :)Few? I would hazard a guess and say most experienced members in this forum DON'T use Nortons. Even some of the former Nortons stalwarts have changed to other antivirus applications in there time here. Time will eventually show you that it is nothing more than a heap of crap, and that many other AV's (free and nonfree) do a better job with less hassle.

Some of us have even ditched Windows, in our search for something better (but they are the minority). Yet most of those will still help the Windows user fix their problems, solve the AV problems etc etc.

What a massive exaggeration. I think you'll find the majority of us use such high profile companies such as Microsoft, Intel, AMD to name just a few.
But also the majority of us have seen too many nasty issues with Nortons products these days.
I recommend my customers don't use it, most agree mainly due to the outrageous price and the poor support more than anything but I do on occasion get asked to fix it rather than installing some other nicer AV, so I do. It is choice. But most customers I have had that have experienced the evil things it can do when not behaving correctly, soon change to something else.

473174 2006-07-25 09:52:00 For my 2 cents worth I am an ex-Nortons user. I gave up on them when the sub came due and it was just so ridicously complicated to try and pay it that I gave up and went to freebies instead. Never looked back.

I don't know what the people in their marketing dept think about all this (or get paid for). You never hear anything. Be nice to hear from someone at Nortons. I suspect it's about the same as the success of telecom in NZ, the power of advertising and the ease of taking $$$ off a newbie.

EDIT: Which is sad, because I have no doubt there are many good-hearted and skilled people employed there.

473175 2006-07-25 11:25:00 Apps not ending can hung shutdown therefore check out this excerpt from The TweakGuides Tweaking Companion Version 3.1 at www.tweakguides.com authored by Koroush Ghazi:

QUOTE:
Increasing shutdown speed by reducing wait times part 1
Windows XP stores a couple of values in its registry which are responsible for determining how long to wait before shutting down (killing) open applications and services once the shutdown command has been given.
By editing these two settings and changing them to lower values, you can considerably decrease the amount of time that Windows XP needs to successfully shut itself down. The first part of this tweak deals with setting the amount of time Windows will take to kill open applications on shutdown.
Open REGEDIT and navigate to 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\'
Highlight the 'WaitToKillAppTimeout' value.
Set it to '1000' (the default should be 20000).
Now highlight the 'HungAppTimeout' value
Set it to '1000' also.

Increasing shutdown speed by reducing wait times part 2
The second part of this tip changes the same settings, this time for all users on the system.
Open REGEDIT and navigate to 'HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop'
Highlight the 'WaitToKillAppTimeout' value.
Set it to '1000' (the default should be 20000).
Now highlight the 'HungAppTimeout' value.
Set it to '1000' also.

Increasing shutdown speed by reducing wait times part 3
In the third part of this tip, we will alter a second registry setting to decrease the amount of time Windows XP will wait before shutting down active services after receiving a shut down command.
Open REGEDIT and navigate to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contr ol\'
Highlight the value 'WaitToKillServiceTimeout'
Change this value to '1000.'
This should help to considerably speed up the time windows XP takes to shut itself down.

Auto kill tasks on shutdown
By default, Windows XP will prompt the user for input if there are one or more applications which have crashed or are not responding and it receives a shut down command. This halts the shutdown process entirely until the user approves the stopping of the non-responsive app.
By altering the registry slightly, Windows XP can close crashed applications automatically. While this does not speed up the shut down process, it does streamline it, and ensures that the user will not give the shutdown command then get up and leave, only to find the PC still powered on because Windows never received input on what to do with a hung application.
To allow Windows XP to close non-responsive applications automatically upon shutdown:
Open REGEDIT and navigate to 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop'
Highlight the value 'AutoEndTasks.'
Change the value to '1'
XP will now be able to close hung applications without user input during the shutdown process.

END QUOTE

Hope this helps

473176 2006-07-25 13:02:00 I'm an almost ex-nortons user. I have three days left on my free update period, and then it goes bye-bye. *grin*
Just about everything I use is freeware.

It is not at all complicated to renew a Nortons subscription . All you have to do is phone their 0800 number, then post them a cheque . :)

473179 2006-07-25 20:22:00 Post a cheque!? u mean u pay for that stuff!? I can get it free by installing norton 2002 which is smaller, faster and cheaper! No subscriptions with that puppy. Is that fair that I get free subscription just cos I use an older version?

Anyway, if I did use a newer version, theres a file floating round the net that extends your subscription to the year 2041 :P !!!

I'll help u out with some advice... go to linux. You'll never have to worry about internet nasties again. (not even porn if u have firefox+adblock :))

But there are only two votes (www.pressf1.co.nz) for Nortons so far. One is probably yours. :p
