473652 2006-07-26 07:12:00 No matter what i do, i cannot get any torrent client or DC client to connect fully to the internet. This results in pathetic (1k) speeds or the dreaded passive mode. Even with my software and router firewalls completely disabled I still get errors on sites that are intended to check your connection. e.g. www.utorrent.com

In DC when i use the get IP button it enters comes up with my internal ip address (10.0.01 or something) and automactically selects passive mode.

Ive gone through all the steps on sites that instruct you on how to port forward and get full conections. They ALL fail. Is my home network causing this? A wierd problem in XP or, god forbid, Xtra?

Please help.

473653 2006-07-26 07:56:00 What router are you using?
Start, Control Panel, Network connections, right click on your connection, properties, scroll to Internet (TCP/IP), properties, give yourself a manual IP.
Then forward to that port in your router.

473654 2006-07-26 10:24:00 Doesn't seem to work. Just kills my conection between the router and computer. May be doing something wrong though.

I'm using a belkin F5D7230au4 or a F5D7230-4
(The au just means it includes australias BigPond support I think)

I could never set up my computer to connect directly before using a router however.

473655 2006-07-26 11:33:00 I'm assuming you've tried this (www.portforward.com) page?
Find out what your IP is assigned by the DHCP on the router, and just set that as the static IP. Remember to set your default gateway as 192.168.1.1 (or whatever your router's IP is), and to setup your DNS correctly (for testing, I usually just use 4.4.4.1 and 4.4.4.2)

473656 2006-07-27 06:41:00 I managed to have specific (static) address in the TCP/IP properties menu using the Static IP guide on the site you gave me, with the exception of an alternate DNS sever, as i'm only given one DNS server using "ipconfig /all" and the two DNS servers cannot be the same. This seems to work in the sense that I can connect to the internet with this enabled.

However if I then follow the instructions exactly using the PortForward siteto open up a specific port, it still appears to fail and I continue getting the "Error! Port XXXXX does not appear to be open!" message.

473657 2006-07-27 14:14:00 My first suggestion would be to go to www.grc.com and run their ShieldsUp test. This will tell you if any ports are open, eliminating (or not) the possiblity of your torrent client being wrong.

I would then use another computer on the local network and attempt to connect to the port using telnet. If the connection works (you'll either get nothing or garbage - achieving a connection is the important thing) then the problem is with your router. If it fails, it's probably your computer's firewall getting in the way.

473658 2006-07-28 06:52:00 ShieldsUp show the port as being closed. And I have turned off my software firewall (McAfee).

The thing i don't undertsand is that if i disable my router firewall and software firewalls, every test still show my port as being closed, which to my knowledge shouldn't be the case.

Even if i disconect the router and conect directly to my modem with software firewalls disabled, the port are still reported as closed.

Not to sure how to access and use telnet.
