1394956 2015-02-26 07:14:00 After spending 27 years in defence I had to laugh today when I heard the news that people sent were volunteers and anyone who didn't want to go would have no career repercussions. I have seen it before people who did not want to go as helicopter mechanics to the Sinai and Timor island they got buggerised big time and had to leave. prefect (6291)

And rightly so.

They, completely of their own free will, decided upon a career in the Military and then when there is a little action they don’t want to know about it.

Did they think the military was a holiday camp with free travel and the chance to play with “Big Boys Toys.”

I’m sure they were told very early in the peace that at some part of their career they were likely to witness shots fired in anger.

Bottom line, you don't need that type in your team.

Quite right! If you join the army you are expected to kill, or be killed, so the choice is yours to join or not. In my case I was conscripted, I had no choice.

1394959 2015-02-26 21:37:00 I don't think you have portrayed a very accurate representation with your attachment. An account balance selected at any random quarter doesn't say bugger all for cashflow, unpaid dividends (although I will admit I'm not sure how these are handled in a gov account balance) or general economy growth.

I think you should take a good look at the Current Account balance sheet I posted.

It is not random and if you read the top Header it is carefully explained. Cashflow, no matter where, counts for nothing if there is a deficit at the end of it.

The bottom line is we are digging a deeper and deeper hole and having to borrow more and more to meet our obligations. Most people know you can't borrow your way out of debt, but the Government apparently doesn't.

As for a Rock-Star economy. :tui:

And in spite of the facts, English and Key are still bragging how good they are.

You must be pretty old then. If you are talking about conscription under CMT you were NOT expected to kill or be killed. In actual fact it was a lot of fun, and something I have never regretted doing.

1394964 2015-02-27 11:55:00 Honestly I don't know.

Armed conflicts which is the words we use for war these days, seem to always get bogged down and seldom achieves peace.

On the other hand do we turn away and rise above other human suffering only because it is unknown people in a distant land.

The Jordanian pilot being burned to death is a compelling image - we don't have to see it to imagine it. Similarly the beheading by sawing with a knife. Nothing clean and merciful about that.

Should a boy from Kentucky or Manchester or Darwin die trying to stop such tragedies?

I suspect Yes but if was my son...I really do not know.

1394965 2015-02-27 18:55:00 I look at it from the point of view that in relatively recent time’s unknown people put their lives on the line in Armed Conflicts so I could live mine, so it’s not unreasonable to reciprocate and try and save others .

Messing around, like they did in Vietnam, is nonsense and never likely to succeed, so a full scale all out assault on these guys from all United Nations troops is what is required and if this involves flattening a city or area they have conquered then so be it .

To make sure they all turn up, spread the word of a preferential meeting with Allah . :D

I think the following cartoon illustrates the mind-set of these nutters well .
