1394127 2015-02-15 22:47:00 While tablets are very good toys both (gaming and educational) for many kids - young and old :), they are also very good tools for many professionals when they are loaded with well designed apps - (usually those that have been re thought out and custom designed to meet the needs of the end user). Tablets are still toys in general, most people use a real computer when doing actual time consuming work.

Question: would you use a 7 or10" tablet to design a 20 page Web Site from scratch ?

1394128 2015-02-15 23:49:00 Do you buy Levi Clown pockets edition or something?

Nope - Levi's MAN-sized pants. :D

The tablet easily slides into a back pocket in portrait orientation. Sticks out a bit, but its quite safe. Just don't sit down before removing it....

I would use a combo of pen and paper or specific software like Balsamic to mock up the individual pages as well as a code editor on a laptop or desktop then use a selection of iPhone, iPad, Samsung phones and tablets for testing the responsive UI side of things because its more effective to test UI features on each respective device than to imitate them on a desktop.

As an end using person or business it is quite normal to have an application or web app designed to cater for your specific business requirements - like online banking. I find the ASB app much faster and easier to use than the website.

1394130 2015-02-16 00:05:00 I am wondering what the problem is with mine - battery or settings? Might have to get it checked out.

(snip)

I have no problems reading with my Nexus 7, apart from the battery issue. I used to own a Sony eReader and the battery lasted forever, as you say. However, I don't want to have two devices (plus a phone) when one multi use device suffices. I have not had any problems with light conditions with the Nexus - in fact it is vastly superior in that respect to the e-ink Sony.

If you're using the OTG with a USB drive attached regularly, this may be the cause of your unexplained battery drain, since the tablet is effectively powering the USB drive. Not something it was really designed/intended to do...

1394131 2015-02-16 03:10:00 It's more a case of consumption vs creation for tablets than tool vs toy. Would I make a website on one? No. Would I view a bunch of pdf documents on one? Sure why not. Some of the courts are starting to allow them now instead of having masses of documents with you. Alex B (15479)

Or imagine a nurse using one to record patient medical data as he or she does their rounds. The data is then transmitted straight back to the nursing station.
Imagine a fleet of mobile sales managers or mortgage managers inputting customer sales or mortgage data into their iPads/tablets/laptops.

All of those are examples of "real work".

All of those are examples of "real work". Data gets sent back to a real computer. iPads/tablets/laptops --- Not the same thing, ipads/ Tablets = same type of device, laptop is different.

I know of several places that have iPads or Android tablets and do real basic tasks, but return to the Office or use a Laptop to do the more in depth work. Tablets have their place and uses, but its going to be a long time before they completely take over from Laptops / Desktop Computers ( if ever) . Love to see someplace run a domain or Web server server for 100+ computers from a tablet ;)

Would you dump all your computers and ONLY do all your work on a Tablet -- I doubt it.

Actually if the tablet suited the type of work I was doing then Yes, I would be happy to make the transition. I'm not saying that tablets or handhelds take over from a back end or cloud server, I am saying that tablets have become a more effective way for end users to transmit the data they collect in real time to the server for data collection. In other cases, it may be more practical to collect the data on a laptop....
Horses for courses.

Just for the record, I don't care which hand held the person is using - Android, iPhone, Windows phone, people all use different devices.

+1

I'm not planning on hammering out ten thousand word documents on one. Taking notes from lectures + mettings, yes. Watching video lectures, yes. Viewing docs/spreadsheets that I wrote on my computer, yes.

So consumption, sure. But also work, of a kind.

A tablet is a complementary device, not a replacement.
