1395189 2015-02-26 23:56:00 I would say only JKey took a pay drop from his previous job. Any other Mp's wjho could claim the same ?

I'll bet he finds this job much more titillating.

1395190 2015-02-27 12:34:00 The pay rise for Members of Parliament is 3.6%. which works out at $5616 per ordinary MP.

Notably, Andrew Little leader of the Opposition has declined to say he won't accept the increase (which is substantially greater for him). Similarly Green Party members will not comment.

John Key does not accept any Parliamentary salary.

1395191 2015-02-27 17:58:00 No, they are not.

The problem with money, is that the more of it you have, the more divorced you become from the economic reality of the majority of the people, and the less you can relate to their needs.

Science has also shown that greater wealth leads to lower empathy.

Frankly, this is the very worst thing for getting MP's that care about their constituents (although party politics makes the whole 'regional MP' thing a complete mockery anyway). If we wanted them to properly represent the people and to understand the issues, then their household income should be well under 80K, and their personal income about the 50K mark or lower. And party politics, which stifles the voice of the individual, should be banned.

But it won't ever happen.

1395192 2015-02-27 23:06:00 Party politics should be banned in Parliament. Each Government post should be voted in by the public. If at a later date that member was found wanting he/she would be replaced by public vote. The Government would have ministers from all party's. Each post would be voted for based on the aspiring politicians qualifications for the job and personal policy. The same would apply to the Prime Minister. mzee (3324)

Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. Give the man a break, I note that the left wing union leader Labour incumbent didn't refuse the raise let alone refuse all payment ...

On the contrary, I don't think the wealthy philanthropists would agree with you - or "Science". Your first statement is correct to a certain level, but once you rise above that, the uber wealthy invest back into the community.

I'm not talking Queen Street farmers, Remuera wannabes, the Yachting fraternity etc, let's talk about the Stephen Tindalls, the Gareth Morgans of our small nation that put their money where it counts.

Internationally, the Bill Gapes Foundation, Warren Buffet et al would all just shake their heads in wonderment at that statement (Science has ~ lower empathy).
